A HURRICANE WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE MISSISSIPPI GULF
COAST AND ALONG THE LOUISIANA COAST FROM GRAND ISLE EASTWARD
INCLUDING LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN. THIS INCLUDES THE GREATER NEW ORLEANS
AREA AND THE CITIES OF BILOXI AND GULFPORT.
A HURRICANE WATCH AND TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR
SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA FROM WEST OF GRAND ISLE WESTWARD TO MORGAN CITY
LOUISIANA. THIS INCLUDES THE GREATER BATON ROUGE AREA AND THE
PARISHES AROUND LAKE MAUREPAS.
...STORM INFORMATION SUMMARY...
AT 500 PM CDT...HURRICANE IVAN WAS LOCATED AT 28.6 NORTH AND
88.3 WEST...ABOUT 115 MILES SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF GULFPORT OR 125
MILES SOUTH OF THE ALABAMA COASTLINE. IVAN IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH
AT 14 MILES AN HOUR. ON THE FORECAST TRACK...THE CENTER OF IVAN IS
EXPECTED TO REACH THE COAST VERY LATE TONIGHT OR EARLY THURSDAY.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 135 MILES AN HOUR WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. IVAN REMAINS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE.
IVAN IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL AS A MAJOR HURRICANE...AT LEAST A
CATEGORY THREE.

SEVERAL PARISHES HAVE ISSUED EVACUATION ORDERS IN SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA
INCLUDING ORLEANS...JEFFERSON...ST BERNARD...PLAQUEMINES AND ST
CHARLES. RESIDENTS SHOULD MONITOR LOCAL MEDIA FOR EVACUATION ORDERS
FROM LOCAL EMERGENCY AGENCIES.
IN COASTAL MISSISSIPPI...LOCAL GOVERNMENTS IN HARRISON...HANCOCK AND
JACKSON COUNTIES HAVE ISSUED MANDATORY EVACUATIONS IN COASTAL
AND LOW LYING AREAS. PLEASE LISTEN TO LOCAL MEDIA AND CONSULT
LOCAL COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCIES FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS.
RESIDENTS OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA IN THE HURRICANE WARNING AND ALL OF
COASTAL MISSISSIPPI SHOULD RUSH TO COMPLETION PREPARATIONS FOR THE
LIKELIHOOD OF HURRICANE CONDITIONS.
PERSONS IN MOBILE HOMES SHOULD SEEK SAFE SHELTER IN A STURDY
BUILDING. ALL OUTDOOR OBJECTS THAT COULD BECOME AIRBORNE AND BE BLOWN
ABOUT BY THE WIND SHOULD BE SECURED. RESIDENTS SHOULD FOLLOW
EVACUATION RECOMMENDATIONS GIVEN BY LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT

TIDES ARE CURRENTLY ARE 3 TO 5 FEET ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS SOUTHEAST
LOUISIANA...LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN AND COASTAL MISSISSIPPI. TIDES ARE
SHOULD RAPIDLY INCREASE ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI COAST AND EAST
SHORES OF ORLEANS..ST BERNARD AND PLAQUEMINES PARISHES. INUNDATION OF
LOW LYING MISSISSIPPI COASTAL AREAS AND OUTSIDE THE HURRICANE
PROTECTION IN SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA WILL THROUGH TONIGHT. STORM SURGE
FLOODING IS EXPECTED ALONG LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN TONIGHT THROUGH
THURSDAY.
EXTREME STORM SURGE VALUES OF 10 TO 16 FEET AND LOCALLY HIGHER...
ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS WILL OCCUR NEAR AND TO THE EAST OF WHERE THE
HURRICANE MAKES LANDFALL...WITH THE HIGHEST THREAT FROM SOUTHEAST
MISSISSIPPI EASTWARD. SLIGHTLY LOWER...BUT SIGNIFICANT STORM
SURGES... WILL OCCUR TO THE WEST OF WHERE THE HURRICANE MAKES
LANDFALL...RESULTING IN STORM SURGE FLOODING IN LOW LYING COASTAL
AREAS OF OF MISSISSIPPI AND AREAS OUTSIDE THE HURRICANE PROTECTION
LEVEES IN EXTREME SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA. STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 3 TO 5
FEET ABOVE NORMAL CAN ALSO BE EXPECTED AFFECTING AREAS BORDERING LAKE
LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN. LARGE WAVES BATTERING WAVES WILL ACCOMPANY THE
STORM SURGE.
...WIND IMPACTS....
EAST TO NORTHEAST WIND OF 35 TO 45 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS HAVE
SPREAD INTO COASTAL AREAS OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA. AT AN
ELEVATED NOAA AUTOMATED WIND STATION AT BURAS...REPORTED A 77
MPH WIND GUST EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. WINDS GUSTS OF 55 TO 60 MPH
HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN THE LAST HOUR AT THE EAST END OF GRAND ISLE.
WINDS WILL RAPIDLY INCREASE ACROSS THE REGION DURING THE REMAINDER OF
THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS...WINDS IN EXCESS 74 MPH...WILL OVERSPREAD
COASTAL MISSISSIPPI THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT. HURRICANE FORCE
WIND GUSTS WILL ALSO AFFECT THE COASTAL AREAS OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA
FROM THE NEW ORLEANS METRO AREA THROUGH PLAQUEMINES PARISH...
LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. CONSIDERABLY HIGHER WIND GUSTS
CAN BE ALSO EXPECTED IN HIGH RISE BUILDINGS AND ELEVATED BRIDGES AND
ROADWAYS.
EXTREME WIND GUSTS OF 110 TO 135 MPH...LOCALLY HIGHER...ARE LIKELY
NEAR WHERE HURRICANE IVAN MAKES LANDFALL...WITH THE HIGHEST THREAT IN
THE EASTERN PORTION OF THE MISSISSIPPI COAST. EXTENSIVE WIND DAMAGE
TO STRUCTURES NEAR THE COAST IS POSSIBLE WITH WIND GUSTS OF THIS
STRENGTH...ESPECIALLY TO MOBILE HOMES.
...HEAVY RAINFALL...
RAINBANDS WITH HEAVY RAIN HAVE SPREAD INTO COASTAL MISSISSIPPI AND
EXTREME SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. THE RAINBANDS AND
HEAVY RAIN WILL SPREAD INLAND THE REMAINDER OF THE AFTERNOON AND
CONTINUE THROUGH THURSDAY. STORM TOTAL AMOUNTS OF 5 TO 10 INCHES ARE
LIKELY OVER SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA...AND 10 TO 15 INCHES ARE EXPECTED
OVER COASTAL MISSISSIPPI. RIVER FLOODING MAY DEVELOP FROM THE HEAVY
RAIN.
...TORNADOES...
ISOLATED TORNADOES ARE POSSIBLE LATER TODAY AS HURRICANE IVAN
APPROACHES THE COAST. THE MOSTLY LIKELY THREAT WILL BE ALONG
THE MISSISSIPPI COAST AND COASTAL AREAS EAST AND SOUTHEAST OF NEW
ORLEANS.
