HURRICANE LESTER LOCAL STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
304 AM HST SAT SEP 3 2016
...LESTER PASSING NORTHEAST OF THE BIG ISLAND AND CONTINUES TO
TRACK TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST...
.NEW INFORMATION...
UPDATED STORM INFORMATION.
.AREAS AFFECTED...
THIS LOCAL STATEMENT PROVIDES INFORMATION FOR PORTIONS OF
HAWAII.
.WATCHES/WARNINGS...
A HURRICANE WATCH CONTINUES FOR OAHU...MOLOKAI...LANAI...
KAHOOLAWE...MAUI.
A HIGH SURF WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR EAST FACING SHORES OF THE
ISLANDS OF KAUAI...OAHU...MOLOKAI...MAUI AND BIG ISLAND.
.STORM INFORMATION...
AT 2 AM HST...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE LESTER WAS LOCATED NEAR
LATITUDE 21.5N...LONGITUDE 153.2W...OR ABOUT 170 MILES
EAST-NORTHEAST OF HILO...OR ABOUT 300 MILES EAST OF HONOLULU.
HURRICANE LESTER IS MOVING WEST-NORTHWEST AT 15 MPH. MAXIMUM
SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 100 MPH.
.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
HURRICANE LESTER IS FORECAST TO PASS APPROXIMATELY 125 MILES TO
THE NORTHEAST OF THE ISLANDS THIS WEEKEND. LESTER WILL PASS BY THE
BIG ISLAND EARLY THIS MORNING...MAUI COUNTY LATER TODAY...OAHU
THIS EVENING...AND KAUAI TONIGHT. THE HURRICANE IS EXPECTED TO
GRADUALLY WEAKEN DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.
THE MOST SIGNIFICANT IMPACT FROM LESTER IS EXPECTED TO BE VERY
LARGE AND DAMAGING SURF ALONG EAST FACING SHORES.
THERE IS STILL A POSSIBILITY THAT LESTER COULD DRIFT WEST OF THE
CURRENT FORECAST TRACK. ALTHOUGH THE FORECAST CURRENTLY KEEPS THE
STRONGER WINDS AND HEAVIEST RAINS OFFSHORE...OUR LOCAL WEATHER
WILL BE HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE EXACT TRACK THAT LESTER TAKES AS
IT PASSES BY THIS WEEKEND. ONLY A SMALL SHIFT TO THE LEFT SIDE OF
THE FORECAST TRACK WOULD BRING A SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER THREAT OF
DAMAGING WINDS AND FLOODING RAINS TO THE ISLANDS. THUS...A
HURRICANE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR MAUI COUNTY AND THE ISLAND
OF OAHU. HOWEVER...IF THIS TREND CONTINUES...THE HURRICANE WATCH
MAY BE CANCELLED AT 5 AM TODAY.
.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
IT IS VITAL THAT YOU DO NOT FOCUS ON THE EXACT FORECAST TRACK.
FORECAST MOVEMENT...DIRECTION...AND SPEED ARE ONLY ESTIMATES.
EVEN SMALL ERRORS IN THE FORECAST TRACK CAN MEAN MAJOR
DIFFERENCES IN WHERE THE WORST CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR. DAMAGING
EFFECTS CAN EXTEND FAR FROM THE CENTER.
FOR THOSE UNDER A WATCH...NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE. SECURE OR
BRING INDOORS ANY LOOSE OUTDOOR OBJECTS LIKE LAWN FURNITURE...
CHILDRENS TOYS...HANGING PLANTS...BARBECUE GRILLS...OR ANY ITEM
THAT COULD BECOME A DESTRUCTIVE PROJECTILE IN STRONG WINDS. DO
NOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE.
STAY CALM AND KEEP INFORMED. CLOSELY MONITOR NOAA WEATHER RADIO
OR OTHER LOCAL NEWS OUTLETS FOR OFFICIAL STORM INFORMATION.
LISTEN FOR WARNINGS OR CHANGES TO THE FORECAST.
BE READY TO EVACUATE IF NECESSARY. HEED THE ADVICE OF LOCAL
OFFICIALS AND COMPLY WITH ANY ORDERS THAT ARE ISSUED. PERSONS
LIVING NEAR THE SHORE SHOULD BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE QUICKLY
SHOULD BUILDING SURF THREATEN.
&&
.NEXT UPDATE...
THE NEXT LOCAL STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED AROUND 630 AM HST...OR
SOONER IF CONDITIONS WARRANT.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS IN CASE LESTER MOVES CLOSER THAN EXPECTED.
SECURE LOOSE OBJECTS SUCH AS LUMBER...LAWN FURNITURE...GARBAGE
CANS...AND OTHER ITEMS...OR STORE THEM INDOORS. PREPARE FOR THE
POSSIBILITY OF POWER OUTAGES. IF YOU NEED TO MAKE A TRIP TO THE
HARDWARE STORE...THE GROCERY STORE...OR THE GAS STATION...DO SO
AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.
&&
...PROBABILITY OF TROPICAL STORM/HURRICANE CONDITIONS...
BASED ON THE LATEST FORECAST...THE CHANCE FOR TROPICAL STORM
CONDITIONS AT KAHULUI AND HANA IS 11 PERCENT...LANAI CITY 8
PERCENT...AND KAUNAKAKAI 13 PERCENT. THIS REPRESENTS A DOWNWARD
TREND SINCE THE LAST FORECAST.
...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...
VERY LARGE AND DAMAGING SURF...WITH PEAK WAVES OF 15 TO 25 FEET
WITH LOCALLY HIGHER SETS...ARE OCCURRING ALONG EAST FACING SHORES
TODAY AND EXPECTED TO DIMINISH ON SUNDAY. THESE WAVES...IN
COMBINATION WITH A POSSIBLE STORM SURGE OF 1 TO 2 FEET...MAY CAUSE
SIGNIFICANT WAVE RUNUP OR DAMAGE TO COASTAL PROPERTIES AND
INFRASTRUCTURE...INCLUDING ROADWAYS. POWERFUL LONGSHORE AND RIP
CURRENTS WILL BE PRESENT AT MOST BEACHES. LARGE BREAKING WAVES AND
STRONG CURRENTS MAY IMPACT HARBOR ENTRANCES AND CHANNELS CAUSING
CHALLENGING MARINE NAVIGATION.
...INLAND FLOODING...
DEEP TROPICAL MOISTURE AROUND HURRICANE LESTER WILL RESULT IN
INCREASING SHOWERS...WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF LOCALIZED HEAVIER
DOWNPOURS OR THUNDERSTORMS. HOWEVER...THE THREAT OF HEAVY RAIN
AND FLOODING WOULD BE GREATER IF LESTER MOVES FARTHER TO THE WEST
THAN CURRENTLY FORECAST.
...WINDS...
ALTHOUGH THE LATEST FORECAST IS FOR SUSTAINED WINDS TO REMAIN
BELOW TROPICAL STORM FORCE OF 39 MPH...ONLY A SMALL CHANGE IN THE
TRACK OF LESTER COULD RESULT IN HIGHER WINDS.
