SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------
MATTHEW IS MOVING EAST OFF THE COAST OF SOUTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA THIS
MORNING. WIND GUSTS TO 40 MPH WILL CONTINUE ACROSS COASTAL SECTIONS OF
THE CAPE FEAR REGION THROUGH MID-MORNING.
SURF CONDITIONS WILL REMAIN HAZARDOUS TODAY, WITH LARGE BREAKING WAVES
AS WELL AS STRONG RIP CURRENTS.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------
* WIND:
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE MAIN WIND EVENT ARE ONGOING NEAR THE COAST
OF NEW HANOVER AND PENDER COUNTIES. REMAIN WELL SHELTERED FROM DANGEROUS
WIND HAVING POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS. IF REALIZED, THESE IMPACTS INCLUDE:
- SOME DAMAGE TO ROOFING AND SIDING, ALONG WITH DAMAGE TO PORCHES
AND AWNINGS. A FEW BUILDINGS EXPERIENCING WINDOW, DOOR, AND
GARAGE DOOR FAILURES. DAMAGE TO VULNERABLE STRUCTURES SUCH AS
CARPORTS, SHEDS AND MOBILE HOMES IS POSSIBLE.
- LARGE LIMBS WILL BE DOWN WITH SEVERAL TREES SNAPPED OR
UPROOTED. SEVERAL FENCES AND ROADWAY SIGNS MAY BECOME BLOWN
OVER. SOME ROADS MAY BECOME IMPASSABLE DUE TO LARGE DEBRIS
BLOCKING THE ROADWAY, ESPECIALLY WITHIN URBAN OR HEAVILY WOODED
LOCATIONS. SOME BRIDGES, CAUSEWAYS, AND ELEVATED ROADS MAY BE
IMPACTED BY HIGH WINDS MAKING DRIVING ON THEM HAZARDOUS.
- SCATTERED POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGES ARE POSSIBLE, BUT
MORE PREVALENT IN AREAS WITH ABOVE GROUND LINES.
- SMALL CRAFT THAT ARE NOT PROPERLY MOORED MAY BREAK LOOSE.
ELSEWHERE ACROSS SOUTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA AND NORTHEAST SOUTH
CAROLINA, LITTLE TO NO IMPACT IS ANTICIPATED.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
----------------------------------
* EVACUATIONS:
DO NOT RETURN TO EVACUATED AREAS UNTIL HAZARDOUS WINDS DIMINISH AND
FLOOD WATERS ABATE.
* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:
REMAIN SAFELY SHELTERED UNTIL THE STORM FULLY PASSES. ONCE CONDITIONS
IMPROVE, BE CAREFUL GOING OUTSIDE. STAY AWAY FROM DOWNED POWER LINES
AND HAZARDOUS DEBRIS.
BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR AND CHECK ON THOSE LIVING NEXT TO YOU. BE
NEIGHBORLY AND LEND A HELPING HAND.
WHEN CLEARING OUT FALLEN TREES, BE CAREFUL WITH CHAIN SAWS AND AXES.
ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR AND KEEP OTHERS AT A SAFE DISTANCE. USE
THESE TOOLS ACCORDING TO OPERATING MANUALS AND SAFETY INSTRUCTION.
LEANING TREES AND THOSE WHICH HAVE FALLEN ON ROOF TOPS CAN BE
ESPECIALLY CHALLENGING. IF YOU ARE NOT IN GOOD HEALTH OR UNSURE ABOUT
WHAT YOU ARE DOING, HAVE SOMEONE ELSE WITH TREE CUTTING EXPERIENCE DO
THE JOB. NEVER CUT TREES WITHOUT A PARTNER.
IF USING A GENERATOR, AVOID CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING BY FOLLOWING
INSTRUCTIONS BY THE MANUFACTURER. MAKE SURE THAT THE GENERATOR IS RUN
IN A WELL VENTILATED SPACE.
