**DANGEROUS HURRICANE MATTHEW MOVING INTO THE BAHAMAS**

* CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS:

 - A TROPICAL STORM WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SUMTER, POLK, AND
   HIGHLANDS COUNTIES.

* CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS: - A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS IN
  EFFECT FOR SUMTER, POLK, AND HIGHLANDS COUNTIES.

* STORM INFORMATION:
    - ABOUT 530 MILES SOUTHEAST OF FORT MYERS FL
    - 21.8N 75.2W
    - STORM INTENSITY 120 MPH
    - MOVEMENT NORTHWEST OR 325 DEGREES AT 12 MPH

SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------

HURRICANE MATTHEW REMAINS A POWERFUL CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE AND SOME
ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST.  MATTHEW WILL TRACK ACROSS
THE BAHAMAS TODAY AND THURSDAY, AND WILL CONTINUE TO PUSH
NORTHWEST LATE THURSDAY AND FRIDAY PARALLELING JUST OFFSHORE THE EAST
COAST OF FLORIDA. THIS WILL BRING TROPICAL STORM AND HURRICANE
CONDITIONS TO PORTIONS OF THE STATE, WITH TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS
EXTENDING OVER PORTIONS OF THE INTERIOR PENINSULA.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------

* WIND:
PROTECT AGAINST DANGEROUS WIND HAVING POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT
IMPACTS ACROSS HIGHLANDS, POLK, AND SUMTER COUNTIES. POTENTIAL
IMPACTS IN THIS AREA INCLUDE:
     - SOME DAMAGE TO ROOFING AND SIDING MATERIALS, ALONG WITH DAMAGE
       TO PORCHES, AWNINGS, CARPORTS, AND SHEDS. A FEW BUILDINGS
       EXPERIENCING WINDOW, DOOR, AND GARAGE DOOR FAILURES. MOBILE
       HOMES DAMAGED, ESPECIALLY IF UNANCHORED.  UNSECURED LIGHTWEIGHT
       OBJECTS BECOME DANGEROUS PROJECTILES.
     - SEVERAL LARGE TREES SNAPPED OR UPROOTED, BUT WITH GREATER
       NUMBERS IN PLACES WHERE TREES ARE SHALLOW ROOTED. SEVERAL
       FENCES AND ROADWAY SIGNS BLOWN OVER.
     - SOME ROADS IMPASSABLE FROM LARGE DEBRIS, AND MORE WITHIN URBAN
       OR HEAVILY WOODED PLACES. A FEW BRIDGES, CAUSEWAYS, AND ACCESS
       ROUTES IMPASSABLE.
     - SCATTERED POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGES, BUT MORE PREVALENT
       IN AREAS WITH ABOVE GROUND LINES.

* FLOODING RAIN:
PROTECT AGAINST LOCALLY HAZARDOUS RAINFALL AND FLOODING HAVING POSSIBLE
LIMITED IMPACTS ACROSS POLK AND HIGHLANDS COUNTIES. POTENTIAL
IMPACTS INCLUDE:
    - LOCALIZED RAINFALL FLOODING MAY PROMPT A FEW EVACUATIONS.
    - RIVERS AND TRIBUTARIES MAY QUICKLY RISE WITH SWIFTER CURRENTS.
      SMALL STREAMS, CREEKS, CANALS, AND DITCHES MAY BECOME SWOLLEN
      AND OVERFLOW IN SPOTS.
    - FLOOD WATERS CAN ENTER A FEW STRUCTURES, ESPECIALLY IN USUALLY
      VULNERABLE SPOTS. A FEW PLACES WHERE RAPID PONDING OF WATER
      OCCURS AT UNDERPASSES, LOW-LYING SPOTS, AND POOR DRAINAGE
      AREAS. SEVERAL STORM DRAINS AND RETENTION PONDS BECOME
      NEAR-FULL AND BEGIN TO OVERFLOW. SOME BRIEF ROAD AND BRIDGE
      CLOSURES.

ELSEWHERE ACROSS WEST CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, LITTLE TO NO
IMPACT IS ANTICIPATED.

* TORNADOES:
LITTLE TO NO IMPACTS ARE ANTICIPATED AT THIS TIME ACROSS WEST CENTRAL
AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:
NOW IS THE TIME TO BRING TO COMPLETION ALL PREPARATIONS TO PROTECT
LIFE AND PROPERTY IN ACCORDANCE WITH YOUR EMERGENCY PLAN.

FAILURE TO ADEQUATELY SHELTER MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR LOSS OF
