SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------
MATTHEW IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTH-NORTHWEST THROUGH THE CENTRAL
BAHAMAS DURING THE DAY TODAY, AND THEN MOVE VERY NEAR OR ALONG THE
EAST COAST OF FLORIDA THURSDAY AND FRIDAY.
MATTHEW IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HURRICANE THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR
WIDESPREAD TO EXTENSIVE DAMAGE ALONG THE EAST COAST. DO NOT FOCUS ON
THE EXACT TRACK OF THE STORM AS SMALL CHANGES TO THE TRACK MAY BRING
SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE LOCAL IMPACTS ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA.
NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT! EVERYONE SHOULD BRING THEIR HURRICANE
PREPARATIONS TO COMPLETION TODAY.
CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO RAPIDLY DETERIORATE ACROSS PORTIONS OF
SOUTH FLORIDA STARTING SOMETIME THURSDAY MORNING BUT OUTER RAIN BANDS
COULD BEGIN IMPACTING THE AREA TONIGHT. ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL BE
POSSIBLE WITHIN THESE BANDS. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE EXPECTED
ACROSS MUCH OF MAINLAND SOUTH FLORIDA POTENTIALLY STARTING AS EARLY AS
THURSDAY MORNING, WITH THE WINDOW OF CONCERN CONTINUING THROUGH THE
DAY ON FRIDAY. HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS PORTIONS OF
PALM BEACH AND BROWARD COUNTIES CLOSER TO THE COAST, AS WELL AS THE
EASTERN LAKE OKEECHOBEE REGION WITH THE WINDOW OF CONCERN SPANNING
FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON TO MIDDAY FRIDAY.
THE THREAT FOR FLOODING RAIN IS INCREASING, PARTICULARLY ACROSS
EASTERN SECTIONS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, WITH THE THREAT AND POTENTIAL
FOR NUMEROUS ROAD CLOSURES, OVERFLOWING OF DITCHES, AND INUNDATION OF
LOW LYING AREAS. ELSEWHERE, PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN IN SQUALLS MAY CAUSE
FLOODING OF SOME STREETS AND OTHER VULNERABLE LOCATIONS.
THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR LIFE THREATENING SURGE ALONG THE IMMEDIATE
COAST OF NORTHEAST PALM BEACH COUNTY WITH A CONCERN FOR LOCALLY
HAZARDOUS SURGE POSSIBLE ALONG OTHER VULNERABLE LOCATIONS ALONG THE
IMMEDIATE GULF AND ATLANTIC COASTS, AS WELL AS BISCAYNE BAY.
LARGE POUNDING WAVES AND ROUGH SURF WILL ALSO LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT
COASTAL BEACH EROSION, WHICH WILL BE A CONCERN FROM THURSDAY THROUGH
FRIDAY. A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS WILL ALSO CONTINUE THROUGH THE
WEEKEND.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------
* WIND:
PROTECT AGAINST LIFE-THREATENING WIND HAVING POSSIBLE DEVASTATING
IMPACTS ACROSS EASTERN PALM BEACH COUNTY. POTENTIAL IMPACTS IN
THIS AREA INCLUDE:
- STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO STURDY BUILDINGS, SOME WITH COMPLETE ROOF
AND WALL FAILURES. COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OF MOBILE HOMES. DAMAGE
GREATLY ACCENTUATED BY LARGE AIRBORNE PROJECTILES. LOCATIONS
MAY BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS OR MONTHS.
- NUMEROUS LARGE TREES SNAPPED OR UPROOTED ALONG WITH FENCES AND
ROADWAY SIGNS BLOWN OVER.
- MANY ROADS IMPASSABLE FROM LARGE DEBRIS, AND MORE WITHIN URBAN
OR HEAVILY WOODED PLACES. MANY BRIDGES, CAUSEWAYS, AND ACCESS
ROUTES IMPASSABLE.
- WIDESPREAD POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGES. MANY WINDOWS WILL
BE SHATTERED BY FLYING DEBRIS, PARTICULARLY IN HIGH RISE
BUILDINGS.
ALSO, PROTECT AGAINST LIFE-THREATENING WIND HAVING POSSIBLE
SIGNIFICANT TO EXTENSIVE IMPACTS ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF MAINLAND
SOUTH FLORIDA EXCEPT ALONG THE IMMEDIATE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA GULF
COAST.
* SURGE:
PROTECT AGAINST LIFE-THREATENING SURGE HAVING POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT
IMPACTS ALONG THE IMMEDIATE BEACH FRONT AREAS OF NORTHERN PALM BEACH
COUNTY. POTENTIAL IMPACTS IN THIS AREA INCLUDE:
- AREAS OF INUNDATION WITH STORM SURGE FLOODING ACCENTUATED BY
WAVES. DAMAGE TO SEVERAL BUILDINGS, MAINLY NEAR THE COAST.
- SECTIONS OF NEAR-SHORE ESCAPE ROUTES AND SECONDARY ROADS BECOME
WEAKENED OR WASHED OUT, ESPECIALLY IN USUALLY VULNERABLE LOW
SPOTS.
- MAJOR BEACH EROSION WITH HEAVY SURF BREACHING DUNES. STRONG AND
NUMEROUS RIP CURRENTS.
- MODERATE DAMAGE TO MARINAS, DOCKS, BOARDWALKS, AND PIERS.
SEVERAL SMALL CRAFT BROKEN AWAY FROM MOORINGS, ESPECIALLY IN
UNPROTECTED ANCHORAGES.
ALSO, PROTECT AGAINST LOCALLY HAZARDOUS SURGE HAVING POSSIBLE LIMITED
IMPACTS ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF THE IMMEDIATE ATLANTIC COASTLINE FROM
CENTRAL PALM BEACH COUNTY TO MIAMI-DADE COUNTY...INCLUDING VULNERABLE
LOCATIONS OF BISCAYNE BAY. LIMITED IMPACTS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE ALONG THE
IMMEDIATE COASTLINE ALONG THE GULF IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
* OTHER COASTAL HAZARDS:
A SIGNIFICANT CONCERN AS HURRICANE MATTHEW PASSES CLOSE TO THE REGION IS
THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION FROM HIGH WAVES AND
LIFE-THREATENING RIP CURRENTS ALONG THE SOUTHEAST FLORIDA BEACHES.
THE MAIN WINDOW OF CONCERN IS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY FOR BEACH EROSION
AND HIGH WAVES WITH A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS LINGERING INTO THE
WEEKEND.
