NEAR LATITUDE 41.4N...LONGITUDE 73.7W. THIS WAS ABOUT 40 MILES
NORTH-NORTHEAST OF NEW YORK CITY NY...OR ABOUT 100 MILES
WEST-NORTHWEST OF MONTAUK POINT NY. STORM MOTION WAS NNE OR
20 DEGREES AT 26 MPH. STORM INTENSITY WAS 60 MPH.
.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
HURRICANE IRENE...CURRENTLY CENTERED OVER THE LOWER HUDSON
VALLEY...WILL CONTINUE TO TRACK NORTH NORTHEAST INTO EARLY THIS
AFTERNOON. SCATTERED RAIN SHOWERS WILL GRADUALLY TAPER OFF THIS
AFTERNOON...BUT RESIDUAL RIVER FLOODING WILL CONTINUE. LOCALLY
DAMAGING WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE INTO THIS AFTERNOON.
MODERATE TO MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING OVER WESTERN LONG ISLAND SOUND
AND THE EASTERN SOUTH SHORE BACK BAYS WILL GRADUALLY SUBSIDE
THROUGH EARLY THIS AFTERNOON. SEVERE BEACH EROSION AND WASHOVERS
WILL LIKELY CONTINUE THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON DUE TO DESTRUCTIVELY
HIGH SURF.
A TOTAL OF 4 TO 12 INCHES OF RAIN HAS FALLEN ACROSS MUCH OF THE
REGION...WITH LITTLE ADDITIONAL RAINFALL EXPECTED. THE HIGHEST
AMOUNTS HAVE BEEN ACROSS THE NEW YORK CITY METROPOLITAN AREA AND
AREAS TO THE NORTH AND WEST. RESIDUAL DRAINAGE FROM THIS RAINFALL
IS CAUSING MODERATE TO MAJOR RIVER FLOODING...WHICH IS LIKELY TO
CONTINUE INTO TONIGHT. SIGNIFICANT AND WIDESPREAD URBAN AND POOR
DRAINAGE FLOODING WILL GRADUALLY SUBSIDE THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON.
