LATITUDE 41.4N...LONGITUDE 73.7W. THIS WAS ABOUT 60 MILES
SOUTHWEST OF HARTFORD CT. STORM MOTION WAS NORTH-NORTHEAST OR 20
DEGREES AT 26 MPH. STORM INTENSITY WAS 60 MPH.
.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
IRENE REMAINS A STRONG TROPICAL STORM AND CONTINUES TO MOVE
NORTH-NORTHEAST AND WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND
TODAY.
BASED ON THE LATEST INFORMATION...PEOPLE IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND
CAN STILL EXPECT A PERIOD OF STRONG TO DAMAGING WINDS THIS
AFTERNOON AND COASTAL FLOODING ALONG THE SOUTH COAST DURING THIS
EVENING/S HIGH TIDE.
IRENE IS STILL A LARGE TROPICAL CYCLONE. YOU WILL NOT NEED TO BE
CLOSE TO THE CENTER OF IRENE TO EXPERIENCE STRONG TO DAMAGING
WINDS AS IT MOVES THROUGH SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND THIS AFTERNOON.
WIDESPREAD DAMAGE IS EXPECTED ACROSS SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND WITH
NUMEROUS DOWNED TREES AND POWER OUTAGES.
THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL HAS ALREADY OCCURRED WITH LIGHTER RAINFALL
FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY. MANY RIVERS AND STREAMS ARE RISING
RAPIDLY...WITH SOME WELL OUT OF THEIR BANKS AT MIDDAY. A FLOOD WATCH
WITH MANY FLOOD WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR MOST OF SOUTHERN
NEW ENGLAND. LISTEN FOR POSSIBLE FLOOD WARNINGS FOR YOUR

INTO EARLY THIS EVENING. MINOR TO MODERATE DAMAGE IS LIKELY TO
MANY MOBILE HOMES... ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT HAVE CANOPIES...AWNINGS...OR
CARPORTS. POORLY CONSTRUCTED HOMES MAY SUSTAIN MINOR WALL DAMAGE AND
PARTIAL ROOF REMOVAL. OTHER HOMES MAY HAVE MINOR ROOF AND SIDING
DAMAGE. SOME LOOSE OUTDOOR ITEMS WILL BE TOSSED AROUND AND MAY
CAUSE ADDITIONAL DAMAGE. A FEW POWER LINES WILL BE KNOCKED DOWN

WATER LEVELS OF 1 TO 3 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL ARE EXPECTED WITH
WITH THIS EVENINGS HIGH TIDE FOR THE UPPER REACHES OF BUZZARDS
AND NARRAGANSETT BAYS. THERE IS A LOW PROBABILITY THAT WATER
LEVELS IN THE UPPER PORTIONS OF BUZZARDS BAY COULD REACH 4 TO 5 FT
ABOVE GROUND LEVEL.
LARGE OFFSHORE WAVES UP TO 30 FEET WILL RESULT IN POWERFUL
BREAKERS NEAR SHORE. THIS WILL RESULT IN BEACH EROSION AND POSE A
SIGNIFICANT HAZARD TO BYSTANDERS NEAR THE SHORE. THOSE VENTURING
OUT ONTO LOW PIERS AND JETTIES THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING TO
OBSERVE THE WAVES WILL BE PLACING THEMSELVES IN HARMS WAY. LARGE
BREAKING WAVES CAN DEVELOP WITHOUT WARNING AND COULD EASILY SWEEP
BYSTANDERS OUT TO SEA OR KNOCK THEM INTO THE OCEAN...CAUSING
SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
