SOUTHEAST OF FORT PIERCE FL. STORM MOTION WAS NORTH NORTHWEST AT
13 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS WERE 115 MPH. SOME STRENGTHENING
IS POSSIBLE TODAY AND TONIGHT. THE LATEST MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE
REPORTED BY AN AIR FORCE RESERVE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT WAS
951 MB OR 28.08 INCHES.
.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
HURRICANE IRENE WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE THROUGH THE NORTHWEST
BAHAMAS THROUGH EARLY AFTERNOON AND EMERGE INTO THE ATLANTIC WATERS BY
LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING. IRENE WILL THEN PASS EAST OF THE
FLORIDA PENINSULA TONIGHT AND FRIDAY MORNING AS A LARGE AND
POWERFUL MAJOR HURRICANE.
THE CENTER OF IRENE IS STILL EXPECTED TO REMAIN AROUND 175 TO 200
MILES OFFSHORE. OUTER RAINBANDS WILL BEGIN TO AFFECT THE EAST
CENTRAL FLORIDA ATLANTIC WATERS AND COASTAL COUNTIES THIS AFTERNOON
AND TONIGHT.
SUSTAINED TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS WILL BEGIN DEVELOPING OVER
THE WATERS FROM THE TREASURE COAST...AND SPREAD NORTHWARD DURING

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE EAST CENTRAL
FLORIDA COAST. DANGEROUS POUNDING SURF WITH BREAKING WAVES OF 8 TO

LARGE LONG PERIOD SWELLS AND STRONG ONSHORE FLOW WILL PRODUCE
MODERATE TO SEVERE BEACH EROSION ALONG AREA BEACHES. ALSO...THE RIP
CURRENT RISK IS HIGH. THE RISK WILL INCREASE RAPIDLY TODAY AND
REMAIN A SIGNIFICANT CONCERN INTO THE WEEKEND.
LARGE BATTERING WAVES MAY ALSO POSE A HAZARD TO VULNERABLE PIERS
WHICH MAY BE DAMAGED FROM LARGE BREAKING WAVES.
THOUGH WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAINS ARE NOT EXPECTED...THERE WILL BE A LOW
THREAT FOR LOCALIZED FLOODING RAIN ALONG THE COAST INTO FRIDAY
MORNING ASSOCIATED WITH PASSING SQUALLS. ISOLATED TORNADOES AND

...TROPICAL STORM FORCE GUSTS EXPECTED IN PASSING RAIN SQUALLS
THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA...
...SUSTAINED WINDS TO AROUND 35 MPH EXPECTED ACROSS THE BARRIER
ISLANDS TONIGHT WITH HIGHER GUSTS IN SQUALLS...
...WINDS...
SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO 20 TO 25 MPH ALONG THE COAST
THIS MORNING AND WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE INTO THE EVENING AND
OVERNIGHT HOURS. SUSTAINED WINDS WILL LIKELY INCREASE TO 30 TO 35 MPH
LATER TONIGHT ACROSS THE BARRIER ISLANDS AND IMMEDIATE COASTAL
LOCATIONS WITH SOME GUSTS TO TROPICAL STORM STRENGTH. WINDS ACROSS
INLAND SECTIONS OF THE COASTAL COUNTIES WEST OF INTERSTATE 95 WILL
NOT BE QUITE AS STRONG BUT STILL WINDY...IN THE 25 TO 30 MPH RANGE
INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS WITH GUSTS TO 35 TO 40 MPH.
THE LONGEST PERIOD OF STRONG SUSTAINED WINDS WILL OCCUR TONIGHT
ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COAST AND BARRIER ISLANDS WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS
MAY REACH 35 MPH WITH GUSTY WINDS UP TO 45 MPH BETWEEN 8 PM AND 10
AM FRIDAY MORNING. SLIGHTLY HIGHER WINDS MAY OCCUR RIGHT ALONG
THE OCEANFRONT AREAS OF THE BARRIER ISLANDS FOR A TIME LATE TONIGHT.
PASSING RAIN SQUALLS CAN PRODUCE STRONGER WIND GUSTS TO 45 TO 50
MPH THROUGH TONIGHT...MAINLY NEAR THE COAST.
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT COASTAL RESIDENTS BRING EXPOSED LIGHTWEIGHT
OBJECTS...SUCH AS LAWN FURNITURE AND TRASH CANS...THAT CAN BE
BLOWN AROUND BY THE WIND INTO A SHELTERED AREA OR INDOORS. HIGH
PROFILE VEHICLES SHOULD EXERCISE CAUTION ON ELEVATED ROADWAYS AND
CAUSEWAYS TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING WITH GUSTY CROSS WINDS
EXPECTED.
...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...
STORM SURGE IS EXPECTED TO BE MINIMAL WITH THE CENTER OF
HURRICANE IRENE REMAINING WELL OFFSHORE. HOWEVER...HIGH SURF AND
LARGE SWELLS WILL IMPACT THE BEACHES WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR
SIGNIFICANT EROSION AND LOCALIZED COASTAL FLOODING IN VULNERABLE
AREAS. THE THREAT FOR BEACH EROSION WILL LAST THROUGH THE HIGH
TIDE CYCLES THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING. HIGH TIDES INTO SATURDAY
WILL GENERALLY BE AROUND 6 AM AND 6 PM. ALSO...THE RIP CURRENT
RISK IS HIGH TODAY AND INTO THE WEEKEND. EVERYONE IS STRONGLY
ADVISED TO STAY OUT OF THE LARGE AND BATTERING SURF. LARGE
BATTERING WAVES CAN KNOCK YOU DOWN AND MAKE EVEN EXPERIENCED
SWIMMERS SUSCEPTIBLE TO DROWNING.
