Areas affected...northern Alabama
Concerning...Tornado Watch 109...
Valid 122214Z - 122345Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 109 continues.
SUMMARY...Potential for strong/damaging winds remains evident across
northern Alabama, along with risk for tornadoes. Potential will
continue as storms shift quickly east-northeastward.
DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows widespread thunderstorms
crossing the northern third of Alabama -- within Tornado Watch 109.
The strongest storms are within a bowing cluster exhibiting a
persistent mesolow/comma-head circulation, which is now crossing
Walker County. Along with risk for damaging winds, tornadoes remain
possible with this cluster of fast-moving storms, as several
smaller-scale circulations remain evident within the cluster. The
strongest of these circulations -- now over southern Walker County
-- is currently associated with a TDS/CC min suggestive of a tornado
in progress.
The severe/tornado potential is being supported by intense/veering
flow through the lower and mid troposphere, with this wind field
widespread across the Mid South/Tennessee Valley area. However,
instability diminishes with northward extent across Tennessee. As
such, storms over northern portions of the watch in the vicinity of
the Tennessee/Alabama border counties remain weaker at this time.
While some risk remains across this part of the area, expect
greatest severe/tornado risk to remain over southern portions of the
WW over the next hour or so.
