PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN
1039 AM CDT MON JUL 9 2012
...A LOOK BACK AT THE REMARKABLE HEAT WAVE OF 2012...
MUCH OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE ENJOYED ITS FIRST SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL IN
MORE THAN A MONTH THIS PAST WEEKEND, WITH THE ADDED BENEFIT OF
MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES. THIS BRINGS TO A CLOSE ONE OF THE MOST
REMARKABLE STRETCHES OF HOT WEATHER IN MID STATE HISTORY. THE
COMBINATION OF STRONG HIGH PRESSURE AND AN EXTREMELY DRY, ALMOST
DESERT-LIKE AIR MASS COMBINED TO PRODUCE TEMPERATURES THAT HAVE
RARELY BEEN OBSERVED IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE.
BETWEEN JUNE 28 AND JULY 7, NASHVILLE BROKE DAILY RECORD HIGHS ON
8 OUT OF 10 DAYS. THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE DURING THIS
INCREDIBLE RUN WAS 104 DEGREES. ON JUNE 29, NASHVILLE BROKE ITS
ALL-TIME RECORD HIGH OF 107 DEGREES WHEN THE MERCURY TOPPED OUT AT
109. THE PREVIOUS RECORD HAD STOOD FOR 60 YEARS. THIS OCCURRED
DURING A STRETCH WHEN THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 105 DEGREES OR
BETTER ON 4 STRAIGHT DAYS, THE FIRST TIME THAT HAS EVER OCCURRED.
AT CROSSVILLE, THE HEAT WAS JUST AS IMPRESSIVE. LIKE NASHVILLE,
CROSSVILLE SET NEW RECORD HIGHS ON 8 OF 10 DAYS, AND TIED ANOTHER.
THUS, ONLY ONCE DURING THIS 10-DAY PERIOD DID CROSSVILLE FAIL TO
BREAK OR TIE A RECORD HIGH. CROSSVILLE ALSO SET A NEW ALL-TIME
RECORD HIGH WHEN THE MERCURY HIT 102 DEGREES ON JULY 29. SINCE
RECORD KEEPING THERE BEGAN IN 1954, ONLY 3 TIMES HAVE TRIPLE DIGIT
TEMPERATURES EVER BEEN RECORDED. TWO OF THOSE THREE OCCURRENCES
HAPPENED ON BACK TO BACK DAYS, JUNE 29TH AND 30TH OF THIS YEAR.
NASHVILLE AND CROSSVILLE WEREN'T THE ONLY MIDDLE TENNESSEE
STATIONS TO SET NEW ALL-TIME RECORD HIGHS ON JUNE 29. OTHER HIGH
TEMPERATURE MARKS WERE REACHED AT WOODBURY, AT 110 DEGREES,
COLUMBIA AND KINGSTON SPRINGS, 109 DEGREES, CHEATHAM DAM,
CLARKSVILLE'S OUTLAW FIELD, FRANKLIN, SHELBYVILLE, AND SPARTA, 108
DEGREES, LAWRENCEBURG, OLD HICKORY, AND PULASKI, 106 DEGREES,
COOKEVILLE, 105 DEGREES, AND JAMESTOWN AND MONTEREY, WITH 103
DEGREES.
INDEED, JUNE 29, 2012 MAY LEGITIMATELY BE REGARDED AS "THE HOTTEST
DAY EVER IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE."
FORTUNATELY, THE WEATHER PATTERN THAT PRODUCED THE RECORD HEAT HAS
SHIFTED, AND MIDDLE TENNESSEE IS NOW ENTERING A WETTER, COOLER
PERIOD DURING THE UPCOMING WEEK. TEMPERATURES DURING THE NEXT 7
DAYS WILL HOVER RIGHT AROUND NORMAL, AND MANY PLACES WILL SEE
THEIR RAINFALL DEFICIT SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED.
