SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------
Tropical Storm Nate is weakening rapidly over interior southwestern
Alabama this morning as it moves toward central Alabama. Maximum
sustained winds continue to decrease near and east of the center of
Nate. Storm surge values are falling across the coastal areas, but
remain elevated due to a persistent southerly wind. The tornado and
flash flood threats will continue to decrease this morning and remain
confined mainly east of I-65. The main concern is inundation flooding
from previous heavy rains until water levels recede.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------
* SURGE:
Potential impacts from the main surge event remain along the Alabama
and northwest Florida coastline. These impacts include:
- Large areas of deep inundation with storm surge flooding
accentuated by battering waves. Structural damage to buildings,
with several washing away. Damage compounded by floating
debris. Locations may be uninhabitable for an extended period.
- Large sections of near-shore escape routes and secondary roads
washed out or severely flooded. Flood control systems and
barriers may become stressed.
- Severe beach erosion with significant dune loss.
- Major damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers. Many
small craft broken away from moorings, especially in
unprotected anchorages with some lifted onshore and stranded.
Maximum storm surge inundation of 5 to 8 feet across southwest Alabama
and 3 to 5 feet across the western Florida Panhandle early this morning
will continue to lower throughout the day.
* WIND:
Potential impacts from the main wind event continue across south central
Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle. These impacts include:
- Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored
mobile homes. Unsecured lightweight objects blown about.
- Many large tree limbs broken off. A few trees snapped or
uprooted, but with greater numbers in places where trees are
shallow rooted. Some fences and roadway signs blown over.
- A few roads impassable from debris, particularly within urban
or heavily wooded places. Hazardous driving conditions on
bridges and other elevated roadways.
- Scattered power and communications outages.
Elsewhere across portions of southwest Alabama and inland southeast
Mississippi little to no impact is anticipated.
* FLOODING RAIN:
Potential impacts from the flooding rain are still unfolding east
of the Alabama River. If realized, these impacts include:
- Localized rainfall flooding may prompt a few evacuations.
- Rivers and tributaries may quickly rise with swifter currents.
Small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches may become swollen
and overflow in spots.
- Flood waters can enter a few structures, especially in usually
vulnerable spots. A few places where rapid ponding of water
occurs at underpasses, low-lying spots, and poor drainage
areas. Several storm drains and retention ponds become
near-full and begin to overflow. Some brief road and bridge
closures.
Elsewhere across portions of southwest Alabama...northwest
Florida...south central Alabama...and inland southeast Mississippi.,
little to no impact is anticipated.
* TORNADOES:
Potential impacts from tornadoes are still unfoldi
