Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Nashville TN

...September was much warmer and wetter in Nashville...

This was a warm September for Nashville. The average monthly
temperature was 77.3 degrees, which was 5.8 degrees above normal.
That ranks this month as the 4th warmest September on record.
Nashville's records date back to 1870. The warmest September on
record was in 1925 when the Nashville area experienced seven
straight days of high temperatures at or above 100 degrees. In
comparison, our hottest temperature for this September was "only"
97 degrees and occurred on the 20th. 14 days of the month saw
highs at or above 90 degrees. The coolest temperature was 55
degrees on the 28th.

A stalled frontal boundary made September a wet month as well. A
total of 6.9 inches fell at the Nashville airport. This was 3.49
inches above normal and made this September the 7th wettest on
record. The majority of the rain was spread out over several days
and luckily didn't lead to any widespread flooding issues. The
wettest day was the 23rd when 1.87 inches fell.

There were 2 tornadoes in Middle Tennessee in September. The first
was an EF0 in Cannon County on September 24th. This was the first
September tornado on record for Cannon County. The second was an
EF1 tornado in southern Fentress County on September 26th, and was
the first September tornado for that county as well.

...Wettest September on Record in Crossville...

Crossville experienced a much warmer and wetter September than
normal. The total rainfall for the month was 10.59 inches. This
is 6.71 inches above normal and made this the wettest September
on record for the city. Dry soil conditions and the fact that the
heaviest rainfall was spread across several days kept widespread
flooding issues at bay. The highest 24 hour rainfall amount was
2.68 and occurred on the 23rd. Another very wet day followed on
the 27th when 2.12 inches of rain fell.

It was also a very warm month for Crossville. The average
temperature for the month was 71.8 degrees, which is 4.6 degrees
above normal. That made the month the second warmest on record.
The warmest September occurred in 1998 when the average
temperature was 72.3 degrees. Crossville's records date back to
1954.
