SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------
ALTHOUGH HERMINE HAS TRANSITIONED INTO A POST TROPICAL STORM,
THIS DOES NOT LESSEN THE IMPACTS, AND THEY SHOULD BE TAKEN JUST AS
SERIOUSLY. HERMINE IS A LARGE STORM SYSTEM AND IS EXPECTED TO
REMAIN IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO OUR REGION AS IT MEANDERS 100 TO 200
MILES OFFSHORE THROUGH MIDWEEK. THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR SOME
STRENGTHENING TO HURRICANE FORCE OVER THE WARM ATLANTIC WATERS.
A TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR LOCATIONS IN DELAWARE
AND NEW JERSEY THAT ARE NEAR THE COAST AS WELL AS ALONG THE DELAWARE
BAY AND RARITAN BAY. THIS WARNING ALSO INCLUDES THE COASTAL
WATERS AND THE DELAWARE BAY. SUSTAINED TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS
ARE NOW EXPECTED TO ARRIVE BY EARLY MONDAY MORNING, WHICH IS LATER
THAN PREVIOUSLY FORECAST. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE EXPECTED
TO CONTINUE INTO MONDAY AFTERNOON BUT IT COULD LINGER INTO EARLY
TUESDAY MORNING IF THE STORM IS SLOWER TO MAKE ITS TURN
NORTHEASTWARD AND AWAY FROM THE AREA. THERE IS STILL REASONABLE
POTENTIAL FOR TROPICAL STORM FORCE WIND GUSTS SUNDAY NIGHT AND
MONDAY SLIGHTLY FARTHER INLAND ACROSS NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE BUT
THE STRONGEST WINDS LOOKS TO BE CONFINED TO OFFSHORE AND NEAR THE
COAST.
MINOR TO ISOLATED MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING IS LIKELY AROUND THE
TIMES OF HIGH TIDE LATE THIS MORNING ALONG THE OCEANFRONT AND
EARLY THIS AFTERNOON IN BACK BAYS AND ALONG THE DELAWARE BAY.
DANGEROUS STORM SURGE WILL REACH THE COAST TONIGHT WHEN WIDESPREAD
MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING IS FORECAST TO OCCUR WITH THE HIGH TIDE
TONIGHT AND AGAIN ON MONDAY LATE MORNING/EARLY AFTERNOON. A
REASONABLE WORST-CASE SCENARIO IS FOR MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING TO
OCCUR WITH THESE HIGH TIDE CYCLES. THE GREATEST THREAT FOR
POTENTIAL MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING IS WITH THE MONDAY HIGH TIDE
ALONG THE DELAWARE AND SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY COAST INCLUDING BACK
BAYS, AS WELL AS ON THE SOUTHERN SHORE OF THE DELAWARE BAY.
THE THREAT OF HEAVY RAINFALL AND FLOODING HAS DIMINISHED ACROSS
THE AREA WITH THE FORECAST STORM TRACK TRENDING SLIGHTLY FARTHER
OFFSHORE.
HAZARDOUS SEAS AND DANGEROUSLY ROUGH SURF CAN BE EXPECTED THROUGH
THE REMAINDER OF THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND AND INTO MIDWEEK. SIGNIFICANT
BEACH EROSION IS EXPECTED WITH HEAVY SURF BREACHING DUNES. A HIGH
RIP CURRENT RISK AT THE BEACHES WILL POSE A SERIOUS THREAT TO LIFE
FOR ANY SWIMMERS THAT DECIDE TO VENTURE OUT INTO THE OCEAN.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------
* SURGE:
PROTECT AGAINST LIFE-THREATENING SURGE HAVING POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT
IMPACTS ACROSS COASTAL AREAS OF NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE AND ALONG
THE SHORE OF DELAWARE BAY. POTENTIAL IMPACTS IN THIS AREA INCLUDE:
- AREAS OF INUNDATION ARE POSSIBLE WITH STORM SURGE FLOODING
ENHANCED BY WAVES. IN PARTICULAR, RECORD FLOODING IS POSSIBLE
SOUTH OF THE ATLANTIC CITY AREA. DAMAGE IS LIKELY TO SEVERAL
BUILDINGS, MAINLY NEAR THE COAST.
- SECTIONS OF NEAR-SHORE ESCAPE ROUTES AND SECONDARY ROADS COULD
BECOME WEAKENED OR WASHED OUT, ESPECIALLY IN USUALLY VULNERABLE
LOW SPOTS.
- MAJOR BEACH EROSION IS EXPECTED WITH HEAVY SURF BREACHING
DUNES. STRONG AND NUMEROUS RIP CURRENTS ARE EXPECTED.
- MODERATE DAMAGE TO MARINAS, DOCKS, BOARDWALKS, AND PIERS IS
ANTICIPATED. SEVERAL SMALL CRAFT MAY BE BROKEN AWAY FROM
MOORINGS, ESPECIALLY IN UNPROTECTED AREAS.
ALSO, PROTECT AGAINST LOCALLY HAZARDOUS SURGE HAVING POSSIBLE LIMITED
IMPACTS ALONG THE DELAWARE RIVER.
ELSEWHERE ACROSS NEW JERSEY, EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA AND EASTERN MARYLAND,
LITTLE TO NO IMPACT IS ANTICIPATED.
* WIND: PROTECT AGAINST DANGEROUS WIND HAVING POSSIBLE LIMITED
IMPACTS ACROSS COASTAL DELAWARE AND NEW JERSEY. POTENTIAL
IMPACTS IN THIS AREA INCLUDE: - SOME DAMAGE TO ROOFING AND
SIDING IS LIKELY, ALONG WITH DAMAGE TO PORCHES, AWNINGS,
CARPORTS, AND SHEDS. A FEW BUILDINGS WILL EXPERIENCE WINDOW,
DOOR, AND GARAGE DOOR FAILURES. MOBILE HOMES MAY BE DAMAGED,
ESPECIALLY IF UNANCHORED. UNSECURED LIGHTWEIGHT OBJECTS COULD
BECOME AIRBORNE. - SEVERAL LARGE TREES MAY BE SNAPPED OR
UPROOTED. SEVERAL FENCES AND ROADWAY SIGNS COULD BE BLOWN OVER.
- SOME ROADS MAY BE IMPASSABLE FROM LARGE DEBRIS. A FEW BRIDGES,
CAUSEWAYS, AND ACCESS ROUTES MAY BE IMPASSABLE. - THERE COULD BE
SCATTERED POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGES, BUT MORE PREVALENT
IN AREAS WITH ABOVE GROUND LINES.
ALSO, PROTECT AGAINST HAZARDOUS WIND HAVING POSSIBLE LIMITED IMPACTS
FARTHER INLAND ACROSS PARTS OF NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE.
