SITUATION OVERVIEW

POST-TROPICAL CYCLONE HERMINE LOCATED SOUTH OF VIRGINIA BEACH WILL
MOVE NORTHEAST DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS...MAKING ITS CLOSEST APPROACH
TO ST. MARYS COUNTY THIS AFTERNOON. RAIN HAS ENDED OVER ST. MARYS
COUNTY BUT WIND GUSTS TO TROPICAL STORM FORCE WILL CONTINUE THIS
AFTERNOON ESPECIALLY AT POINT LOOKOUT BEFORE BEGINNING TO DIMINISH
THIS EVENING. TIDE LEVELS ARE RUNNING 1.5 TO 2 FEET ABOVE NORMAL AT
STRAITS POINTS WITH MINOR COASTAL FLOODING EXPECTED THERE AT HIGH
TIDE THIS AFTERNOON.
HERMINE IS EXPECTED TO SLOW DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY SUNDAY BUT IS EXPECTED
TO REMAIN FAR ENOUGH EAST OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY TO KEEP FROM PRODUCING
ANY SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS

* WIND:
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE MAIN WIND EVENT ARE NOW UNFOLDING ACROSS
ST MARYS COUNTY. REMAIN WELL SHELTERED FROM HAZARDOUS
WIND HAVING LIMITED IMPACTS. IF REALIZED,
THESE IMPACTS INCLUDE:
- DAMAGE TO PORCHES, AWNINGS, CARPORTS, SHEDS, AND UNANCHORED
MOBILE HOMES. UNSECURED LIGHTWEIGHT OBJECTS BLOWN ABOUT.
- MANY LARGE TREE LIMBS BROKEN OFF. A FEW TREES SNAPPED OR
UPROOTED, ESPECIALLY WHERE THE GROUND IS SATURATED. SOME FENCES
AND ROADWAY SIGNS DAMAGED.
- A FEW ROADS IMPASSABLE FROM DEBRIS, ESPECIALLY IN HEAVILY
WOODED AREAS. HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS ON BRIDGES AND OTHER
ELEVATED ROADWAYS.
- SCATTERED POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGES.
ELSEWHERE ACROSS EASTERN WEST VIRGINIA, CENTRAL AND WESTERN MARYLAND,
NORTHERN AND NORTHWESTERN VIRGINIA, AND DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, LITTLE
TO NO IMPACT IS ANTICIPATED.
* SURGE:
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE MAIN SURGE EVENT ARE NOW UNFOLDING ACROSS
ST MARYS COUNTY. REMAIN WELL AWAY FROM LOCALLY HAZARDOUS
SURGE HAVING LIMITED IMPACTS. IF
REALIZED, THESE IMPACTS INCLUDE:
- LOCALIZED INUNDATION WITH STORM SURGE FLOODING MAINLY ALONG
IMMEDIATE TIDAL SHORELINES, AND IN LOW-LYING SPOTS.
- SECTIONS OF NEAR-SHORE ROADS AND PARKING LOTS BECOME FLOODED.
DRIVING CONDITIONS DANGEROUS IN PLACES WHERE SURGE WATER COVERS
THE ROAD.
- MODERATE SHORELINE EROSION.
- MINOR TO LOCALLY MODERATE DAMAGE TO MARINAS, DOCKS, BOARDWALKS,
AND PIERS. A FEW SMALL CRAFT BROKEN AWAY FROM MOORINGS.
