URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
HURRICANE LESTER LOCAL STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
218 PM HST FRI SEP 2 2016

...LESTER CONTINUING TO MOVE TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST...

.NEW INFORMATION...
UPDATED POSITION INFORMATION.

.AREAS AFFECTED...
THIS LOCAL STATEMENT PROVIDES INFORMATION FOR LOCATIONS WITHIN THE
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

.WATCHES/WARNINGS...
A HURRICANE WATCH CONTINUES FOR OAHU...MOLOKAI...LANAI...
KAHOOLAWE...MAUI.

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR EAST FACING SHORES OF
ALL ISLANDS UNTIL 6 PM.

A HIGH SURF WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR EAST FACING SHORES OF
MOLOKAI...MAUI...AND THE BIG ISLAND FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING
UNTIL 6 PM SATURDAY.

.STORM INFORMATION...
AT 2 PM HST...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE LESTER WAS LOCATED NEAR
LATITUDE 20.3N...LONGITUDE 150.4W...OR ABOUT 305 MILES EAST OF
HILO HAWAII...OR ABOUT 490 MILES EAST OF HONOLULU HAWAII.
HURRICANE LESTER IS MOVING WEST-NORTHWEST AT 15 MPH. MAXIMUM
SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 105 MPH.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
HURRICANE LESTER IS FORECAST TO PASS APPROXIMATELY 125 MILES TO
THE NORTHEAST OF THE ISLANDS THIS WEEKEND. LESTER WILL PASS BY THE
BIG ISLAND EARLY SATURDAY MORNING...MAUI COUNTY ON SATURDAY...OAHU
SATURDAY EVENING...AND KAUAI SATURDAY NIGHT. THE HURRICANE IS
EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY WEAKEN DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT IMPACT FROM LESTER IS EXPECTED TO BE VERY
LARGE AND DAMAGING SURF ALONG EAST FACING SHORES.

THERE IS STILL A POSSIBILITY THAT LESTER COULD DRIFT WEST OF THE
CURRENT FORECAST TRACK. ALTHOUGH THE FORECAST CURRENTLY KEEPS THE
STRONGER WINDS AND HEAVIEST RAINS OFFSHORE...OUR LOCAL WEATHER
WILL BE HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE EXACT TRACK THAT LESTER TAKES AS
IT PASSES BY THIS WEEKEND. ONLY A SMALL SHIFT TO THE LEFT SIDE OF
THE FORECAST TRACK WOULD BRING A SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER THREAT OF
DAMAGING WINDS AND FLOODING RAINS TO THE ISLANDS. THUS... A
HURRICANE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR MAUI...MOLOKAI...LANAI...
KAHOOLAWE.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

IT IS VITAL THAT YOU DO NOT FOCUS ON THE EXACT FORECAST TRACK.
FORECAST MOVEMENT...DIRECTION...AND SPEED ARE ONLY ESTIMATES.
EVEN SMALL ERRORS IN THE FORECAST TRACK CAN MEAN MAJOR
DIFFERENCES IN WHERE THE WORST CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR. DAMAGING
EFFECTS CAN EXTEND FAR FROM THE CENTER.

FOR THOSE UNDER A WATCH...NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE. SECURE OR
BRING INDOORS ANY LOOSE OUTDOOR OBJECTS LIKE LAWN FURNITURE...
CHILDRENS TOYS...HANGING PLANTS...BARBECUE GRILLS...OR ANY ITEM
THAT COULD BECOME A DESTRUCTIVE PROJECTILE IN STRONG WINDS. DO
NOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE.

STAY CALM AND KEEP INFORMED. CLOSELY MONITOR NOAA WEATHER RADIO
OR OTHER LOCAL NEWS OUTLETS FOR OFFICIAL STORM INFORMATION.
LISTEN FOR WARNINGS OR CHANGES TO THE FORECAST.

BE READY TO EVACUATE IF NECESSARY. HEED THE ADVICE OF LOCAL
OFFICIALS AND COMPLY WITH ANY ORDERS THAT ARE ISSUED. PERSONS
LIVING NEAR THE SHORE SHOULD BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE QUICKLY
SHOULD BUILDING SURF THREATEN.

&&

.NEXT UPDATE...
THE NEXT LOCAL STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED AROUND 630 PM HST...OR
SOONER IF CONDITIONS WARRANT.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

TAKE PRECAUTIONS IN CASE LESTER MOVES CLOSER THAN EXPECTED.
SECURE LOOSE OBJECTS SUCH AS LUMBER...LAWN FURNITURE...GARBAGE
CANS...AND OTHER ITEMS...OR STORE THEM INDOORS. PREPARE FOR THE
POSSIBILITY OF POWER OUTAGES. IF YOU NEED TO MAKE A TRIP TO THE
HARDWARE STORE...THE GROCERY STORE...OR THE GAS STATION...DO SO
AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

&&

...PROBABILITY OF TROPICAL STORM/HURRICANE CONDITIONS...
BASED ON THE LATEST FORECAST...THE CHANCE FOR TROPICAL STORM
CONDITIONS AT KAHULUI IS 34 PERCENT...HANA 38 PERCENT...LANAI
CITY 23 PERCENT...AND KAUNAKAKAI 33 PERCENT. THIS REPRESENTS A
SLIGHT UPWARD TREND SINCE THE LAST FORECAST.

...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...
VERY LARGE AND DAMAGING SURF...WITH PEAK WAVES OF 20 TO 25
FEET WITH LOCALLY HIGHER SETS...ARE EXPECTED ALONG EAST FACING
SHORES TONIGHT INTO SATURDAY AND DIMINISHING ON SUNDAY. THESE
WAVES...IN COMBINATION WITH A POSSIBLE STORM SURGE OF 1 TO 2
FEET...MAY CAUSE SIGNIFICANT WAVE RUNUP OR DAMAGE TO COASTAL
PROPERTIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE...INCLUDING ROADWAYS. POWERFUL
LONGSHORE AND RIP CURRENTS WILL BE PRESENT AT MOST BEACHES. LARGE
BREAKING WAVES AND STRONG CURRENTS MAY IMPACT HARBOR ENTRANCES AND
CHANNELS CAUSING CHALLENGING MARINE NAVIGATION.

...INLAND FLOODING...
DEEP TROPICAL MOISTURE AROUND HURRICANE LESTER WILL RESULT IN
INCREASING SHOWERS TONIGHT FOR MAUI COUNTY...WITH THE POSSIBILITY
OF LOCALIZED HEAVIER DOWNPOURS OR THUNDERSHOWERS DEVELOPING THIS
WEEKEND. HOWEVER...THE THREAT OF HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING WOULD BE
GREATER IF LESTER MOVES FARTHER TO THE WEST THAN CURRENTLY FORECAST.

...WINDS...
ALTHOUGH THE LATEST FORECAST IS FOR SUSTAINED WINDS TO REMAIN
BELOW TROPICAL STORM FORCE OF 39 MPH ONLY A SMALL CHANGE IN THE
TRACK OF LESTER COULD RESULT IN HIGHER WINDS.
