SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------
HURRICANE MATTHEW IS NEARING FREEPORT IN THE BAHAMAS LATE THIS
AFTERNOON, AND IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE MOVING NORTHWESTWARD INTO
TONIGHT. DESPITE THE FORECAST TRACK SHIFTING SLIGHTLY MORE OFFSHORE,
MATTHEW REMAINS A SIGNIFICANT THREAT.
MATTHEW IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HURRICANE THAT WILL MOVE JUST
OFFSHORE THE COAST OF PALM BEACH COUNTY LATE THIS EVENING AND INTO
TONIGHT. IT IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN A CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE AS IT MOVES
NEAR THE COAST, BRINGING THE POTENTIAL FOR EXTENSIVE DAMAGE ACROSS
NORTHEAST PALM BEACH COUNTY. ELSEWHERE, THE MAIN CONCERN IS THE
POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT WIND DAMAGE ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF PALM
BEACH AND NORTHEASTERN BROWARD COUNTIES WHERE THERE CONTINUES TO BE A
THREAT OF HURRICANE CONDITIONS. THE MOST LIKELY TIME THAT HURRICANE
FORCE WINDS WILL AFFECT THE AREA IS LATE THIS EVENING THROUGH TONIGHT.
SQUALLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RAIN BANDS OF MATTHEW ARE IMPACTING MUCH
OF SOUTH FLORIDA, AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO PRODUCE TROPICAL
STORM FORCE WIND GUSTS THROUGH FRIDAY.
STORM SURGE COULD RESULT IN SOME VUNERABLE, LOW-LYING AREAS ALONG THE
IMMEDIATE PALM BEACH COUNTY COAST HAVING INUNDATION OF 3 TO 5 FEET
ABOVE GROUND LEVEL. THESE WATER LEVELS ARE MOST LIKELY NEAR TIME OF
HIGH TIDE, WHICH IS JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT. SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION IS
WILL CONTINUE TO OCCUR ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST. A FLOOD WATCH REMAINS
IN EFFECT FOR PALM BEACH COUNTY, WHERE SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL MAY LEAD
TO STREET FLOODING, AND EVEN POSSIBLE FLOODING INTO STRUCTURES.
ISOLATED TORNADOES CAN'T BE RULED OUT, MAINLY OVER PALM BEACH COUNTY
THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------
* WIND:
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE MAIN WIND EVENT ARE NOW UNFOLDING ACROSS
EASTERN PALM BEACH COUNTY. REMAIN WELL SHELTERED FROM
LIFE-THREATENING WIND HAVING POSSIBLE EXTENSIVE
IMPACTS. IF REALIZED, THESE IMPACTS INCLUDE:
- CONSIDERABLE ROOF DAMAGE TO STURDY BUILDINGS, WITH SOME HAVING
WINDOW, DOOR, AND GARAGE DOOR FAILURES LEADING TO STRUCTURAL
DAMAGE. MOBILE HOMES SEVERELY DAMAGED, WITH SOME DESTROYED.
DAMAGE ACCENTUATED BY AIRBORNE PROJECTILES. LOCATIONS MAY BE
UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS.
- MANY LARGE TREES SNAPPED OR UPROOTED ALONG WITH FENCES AND
ROADWAY SIGNS BLOWN OVER.
- SOME ROADS IMPASSABLE FROM LARGE DEBRIS, AND MORE WITHIN URBAN
OR HEAVILY WOODED PLACES. SEVERAL BRIDGES, CAUSEWAYS, AND
ACCESS ROUTES IMPASSABLE.
- LARGE AREAS WITH POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGES. SOME WINDOWS
MAY BE SHATTERED BY FLYING DEBRIS, PARTICULARLY IN HIGH RISE
BUILDINGS OR THOSE WINDOWS NOT IMPACT RESISTANT.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE MAIN WIND EVENT ARE ALSO NOW UNFOLDING
ACROSS EASTERN BROWARD COUNTY. REMAIN WELL SHELTERED FROM THE POSSIBILITY OF
DANGEROUS WIND HAVING LIMITED TO
SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS.
* SURGE:
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE MAIN SURGE EVENT ARE NOW UNFOLDING ACROSS
COASTAL PALM BEACH COUNTY. REMAIN WELL AWAY FROM LIFE-THREATENING
SURGE HAVING POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS. IF
REALIZED, THESE IMPACTS INCLUDE:
- AREAS OF INUNDATION WITH STORM SURGE FLOODING ACCENTUATED BY
WAVES. DAMAGE TO SEVERAL BUILDINGS, MAINLY NEAR THE COAST.
- SECTIONS OF NEAR-SHORE ESCAPE ROUTES AND SECONDARY ROADS BECOME
WEAKENED OR WASHED OUT, ESPECIALLY IN USUALLY VULNERABLE LOW
SPOTS.
- MAJOR BEACH EROSION WITH HEAVY SURF BREACHING DUNES. STRONG AND
NUMEROUS RIP CURRENTS.
- MODERATE DAMAGE TO MARINAS, DOCKS, BOARDWALKS, AND PIERS.
SEVERAL SMALL CRAFT BROKEN AWAY FROM MOORINGS, ESPECIALLY IN
UNPROTECTED ANCHORAGES.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE MAIN SURGE EVENT ARE ALSO NOW UNFOLDING
ACROSS COASTAL AREAS OF BROWARD COUNTY. REMAIN WELL AWAY FROM LOCALLY
HAZARDOUS SURGE HAVING POSSIBLE LIMITED IMPACTS.
ELSEWHERE ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA, LITTLE TO NO IMPACT IS ANTICIPATED.
* FLOODING RAIN:
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE FLOODING RAIN ARE STILL UNFOLDING ACROSS
PALM BEACH COUNTY. REMAIN WELL GUARDED AGAINST DANGEROUS
FLOOD WATERS HAVING POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS.
IF REALIZED, THESE IMPACTS INCLUDE:
- MODERATE RAINFALL FLOODING MAY PROMPT SEVERAL EVACUATIONS AND
RESCUES.
- RIVERS AND TRIBUTARIES MAY QUICKLY BECOME SWOLLEN WITH SWIFTER
CURRENTS AND OVERSPILL THEIR BANKS IN A FEW PLACES, ESPECIALLY
IN USUALLY VULNERABLE SPOTS. SMALL STREAMS, CREEKS, CANALS, AND
DITCHES OVERFLOW.
- FLOOD WATERS CAN ENTER SOME STRUCTURES OR WEAKEN FOUNDATIONS.
SEVERAL PLACES MAY EXPERIENCE EXPANDED AREAS OF RAPID
INUNDATION AT UNDERPASSES, LOW-LYING SPOTS, AND POOR DRAINAGE
AREAS. SOME STREETS AND PARKING LOTS TAKE ON MOVING WATER AS
STORM DRAINS AND RETENTION PONDS OVERFLOW. DRIVING CONDITIONS
BECOME HAZARDOUS. SOME ROAD AND BRIDGE CLOSURES MAY BE NEEDED.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THE FLOODING RAIN ARE STILL UNFOLDING ACROSS
NORTHEAST BROWARD COUNTY. REMAIN WELL GUARDED AGAINST LOCALLY
HAZARDOUS FLOOD WATERS HAVING POSSIBLE LIMITED
IMPACTS.
ELSEWHERE ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA, LITTLE TO NO IMPACT IS ANTICIPATED.
