SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------
DANGEROUS HURRICANE MATTHEW HAS MADE LANDFALL OVER THE EASTERN TIP
OF CUBA TONIGHT. MATTHEW IS FORECAST TO MOVE INTO THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS
DURING THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY, AND INTO THE NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS ON
THURSDAY. THE STORM IS THEN FORECAST TO MOVE NEAR, OR ALONG THE EAST
COAST OF FLORIDA THURSDAY AND FRIDAY.
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS MOST OF SOUTH FLORIDA
AS EARLY AS DAYBREAK THURSDAY, CONTINUING THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING.
HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS PALM BEACH AND NORTHERN
BROWARD COUNTIES, AS WELL AS THE EASTERN LAKE OKEECHOBEE REGION ON
THURSDAY.
THERE IS AN ELEVATED TO MODERATE THREAT OF HAZARDOUS STORM SURGE
INUNDATION ALONG VULNERABLE LOCATIONS ALONG THE IMMEDIATE GULF
AND ATLANTIC COASTS, AS WELL AS BISCAYNE BAY. THE GREATEST THREAT
IS ACROSS NORTHEAST PORTIONS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY BUT IT COULD
INCREASE ELSEWHERE IF THE FORECAST TRENDS CLOSER TO THE COAST.
LARGE POUNDING WAVES AND ROUGH SURF WILL ALSO LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT
COASTAL BEACH EROSION, WHICH WILL BE A CONCERN FROM EARLY THURSDAY MORNING
THROUGH FRIDAY. A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS WILL ALSO CONTINUE THROUGH
THE WEEKEND.
PERIODS OF HEAVY RAINFALL LEADING TO LOCAL FLOODING WILL BE A CONCERN
ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. THERE WILL BE A GROWING CONCERN FOR ISOLATED
TORNADOES AS THE OUTER RAINBANDS OF MATTHEW REACH SOUTH FLORIDA LATE
WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
DO NOT FOCUS ON THE EXACT TRACK. ANY FURTHER SHIFTS IN THE TRACK TO
THE WEST MAY INCREASE THE THREAT FOR HURRICANE CONDITIONS ACROSS THE
REMAINDER OF SOUTH FLORIDA. EVERYONE SHOULD CONTINUE TO BRING THEIR
HURRICANE PREPARATIONS TO COMPLETION DURING THE DAY WEDNESDAY.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------
* WIND:
PROTECT AGAINST LIFE-THREATENING WIND HAVING POSSIBLE DEVASTATING
IMPACTS ACROSS THE IMMEDIATE COASTAL AREAS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS IN THIS AREA INCLUDE:
- STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO STURDY BUILDINGS, SOME WITH COMPLETE ROOF
AND WALL FAILURES. COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OF MOBILE HOMES. DAMAGE
GREATLY ACCENTUATED BY LARGE AIRBORNE PROJECTILES. LOCATIONS
MAY BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS OR MONTHS.
- NUMEROUS LARGE TREES SNAPPED OR UPROOTED ALONG WITH FENCES AND
ROADWAY SIGNS BLOWN OVER.
- MANY ROADS IMPASSABLE FROM LARGE DEBRIS, AND MORE WITHIN URBAN
OR HEAVILY WOODED PLACES. MANY BRIDGES, CAUSEWAYS, AND ACCESS
ROUTES IMPASSABLE.
- WIDESPREAD POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGES. MANY WINDOWS WILL
BE SHATTERED BY FLYING DEBRIS, PARTICULARLY IN HIGH RISE
BUILDINGS.
ALSO, PROTECT AGAINST LIFE-THREATENING WIND HAVING POSSIBLE
SIGNIFICANT TO EXTENSIVE IMPACTS ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF SOUTH FLORIDA,
EXCEPT FOR THE IMMEDIATE COAST OF COLLIER COUNTY.
* SURGE:
PROTECT AGAINST LIFE-THREATENING SURGE HAVING POSSIBLE SIGNIFICANT
IMPACTS ACROSS FAR NORTHEAST PALM BEACH COUNTY CONFINED TO THE
IMMEDIATE COASTLINE. POTENTIAL IMPACTS IN
THIS AREA INCLUDE:
- AREAS OF INUNDATION WITH STORM SURGE FLOODING ACCENTUATED BY
WAVES. DAMAGE TO SEVERAL BUILDINGS, MAINLY NEAR THE COAST.
- SECTIONS OF NEAR-SHORE ESCAPE ROUTES AND SECONDARY ROADS BECOME
WEAKENED OR WASHED OUT, ESPECIALLY IN USUALLY VULNERABLE LOW
SPOTS.
- MAJOR BEACH EROSION WITH HEAVY SURF BREACHING DUNES. STRONG AND
NUMEROUS RIP CURRENTS.
- MODERATE DAMAGE TO MARINAS, DOCKS, BOARDWALKS, AND PIERS.
SEVERAL SMALL CRAFT BROKEN AWAY FROM MOORINGS, ESPECIALLY IN
UNPROTECTED ANCHORAGES.
ALSO, PROTECT AGAINST LOCALLY HAZARDOUS SURGE HAVING POSSIBLE LIMITED
IMPACTS ACROSS ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF THE IMMEDIATE ATLANTIC COASTLINE
FROM CENTRAL PALM BEACH COUNTY TO MIAMI-DADE COUNTY...INCLUDING
VULNERABLE LOCATIONS OF BISCAYNE BAY. LIMITED IMPACTS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE
ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COASTLINE ALONG THE GULF IN SOUTH FLORIDA.
* OTHER COASTAL HAZARDS:
A SIGNIFICANT CONCERN AS HURRICANE MATTHEW PASSES CLOSE TO THE REGION IS
THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION FROM HIGH WAVES AND
LIFE-THREATENING RIP CURRENTS ALONG THE SOUTHEAST FLORIDA BEACHES.
THE MAIN WINDOW OF CONCERN IS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY FOR BEACH EROSION
AND HIGH WAVES WITH A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS LINGERING INTO THE WEEKEND.
