...SUSTAINED WINDS TO 30 TO 35 MPH EXPECTED ACROSS THE BARRIER
ISLANDS TONIGHT WITH HIGHER GUSTS IN SQUALLS...
...WINDS...
SUSTAINED WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 30 TO 35 MPH AFTER MIDNIGHT TONIGHT
ACROSS THE BARRIER ISLANDS AND IMMEDIATE COASTAL LOCATIONS WITH
OCCASIONAL GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH AS HURRICANE IRENE MAKES ITS CLOSEST
APPROACH. THESE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH MID FRIDAY
MORNING. WINDS ACROSS INLAND SECTIONS OF THE COASTAL COUNTIES
WEST OF INTERSTATE 95 WILL NOT BE QUITE AS STRONG BUT STILL
WINDY...IN THE 20 TO 30 MPH RANGE INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS WITH
GUSTS TO 35 TO 40 MPH.
PASSING RAIN SQUALLS WILL PRODUCE STRONGER WIND GUSTS TO 45 TO
50 MPH INTO FRIDAY MORNING. DAYTONA BEACH AIRPORT REPORTED A WIND
GUST TO 44 MPH IN A RAIN SQUALL EARLIER THIS EVENING. NEW SMYRNA
BEACH REPORTED A WIND GUST TO 41 MPH IN THE SAME SQUALL.
...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...
STORM SURGE IS EXPECTED TO BE MINIMAL WITH THE CENTER OF
HURRICANE IRENE REMAINING WELL OFFSHORE. HOWEVER...HIGH SURF AND
LARGE SWELLS WILL IMPACT THE BEACHES WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR
SIGNIFICANT EROSION AND LOCALIZED COASTAL FLOODING IN VULNERABLE
AREAS. A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY IS NOW IN EFFECT ALONG THE COAST.
THE THREAT FOR BEACH EROSION WILL LAST THROUGH THE HIGH TIDE
CYCLES THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING. HIGH TIDES INTO SATURDAY WILL
GENERALLY BE AROUND 6 AM AND 6 PM. EVERYONE IS STRONGLY ADVISED
TO STAY OUT OF THE LARGE AND BATTERING SURF. LARGE BATTERING WAVES
CAN KNOCK YOU DOWN AND MAKE EVEN EXPERIENCED SWIMMERS SUSCEPTIBLE
TO DROWNING. WAVES CRASHING ACROSS PIERS AND JETTIES COULD ALSO
MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STAND OR WALK.
