NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL
606 AM EDT THU AUG 25 2011

...AWAITED IMPACTS FROM MAJOR HURRICANE IRENE ARRIVE TODAY...

.NEW INFORMATION...
SUPPORTING ADVISORIES ARE HIGHLIGHTED FOR THE COASTAL COUNTIES...
TO INCLUDE A WIND ADVISORY...A HIGH SURF ADVISORY... AND A HIGH
RIP CURRENT RISK.

.AREAS AFFECTED...
THIS LOCAL STATEMENT PROVIDES IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND RECOMMENDED
ACTIONS FOR PEOPLE AND MARINE INTERESTS IN THE COASTAL COUNTIES OF
EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA AND THE ADJACENT ATLANTIC WATERS.

.WATCHES/WARNINGS...
FOR MARINE INTERESTS...A TROPICAL STORM WARNING CONTINUES FOR THE
ADJACENT COASTAL WATERS FROM 20 TO 60 NAUTICAL MILES OFFSHORE
JUPITER INLET TO FLAGLER BEACH.

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH CONTINUES FOR THE ADJACENT COASTAL WATERS
OUT TO 20 NAUTICAL MILES OFFSHORE JUPITER INLET TO FLAGLER BEACH.

OVER LAND...ALTHOUGH TROPICAL STORM WATCHES OR WARNINGS ARE NOT
IN EFFECT FOR THE COASTAL COUNTIES OF BREVARD...INDIAN RIVER...
SAINT LUCIE...MARTIN...AND VOLUSIA...IMPACTS FROM RELATED HAZARDS
ARE STILL A SIGNIFICANT CONCERN. AS RESULT...A WIND ADVISORY AND
A HIGH SURF ADVISORY ARE BOTH IN EFFECT TODAY...ALONG WITH A HIGH
RIP CURRENT RISK.

.STORM INFORMATION...
AT 500 AM EDT...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE IRENE WAS LOCATED NEAR
LATITUDE 24.6 NORTH...LONGITUDE 76.2 WEST. THIS WAS ABOUT 380 MILES
SOUTHEAST OF CAPE CANAVERAL FLORIDA...OR ABOUT 330 MILES SOUTHEAST
OF FORT PIERCE FLORIDA. IRENE IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST
NEAR 12 MPH. A TURN TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED
TODAY...FOLLOWED BY A TURN TOWARD THE NORTH BY EARLY FRIDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 115 MPH...WITH HIGHER GUSTS.
IRENE IS A CATEGORY THREE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON
HURRICANE WIND SCALE. SOME STRENGTHENING IS EXPECTED TODAY AND
TONIGHT.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
HURRICANE IRENE WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE THROUGH THE NORTHWEST
BAHAMAS THIS MORNING AND EMERGE INTO THE ATLANTIC WATERS BY LATE
AFTERNOON. IRENE WILL THEN PASS EAST OF THE FLORIDA PENINSULA
TONIGHT AND FRIDAY AS A RATHER LARGE AND POWERFUL MAJOR HURRICANE.

ALTHOUGH THERE HAVE BEEN SOME SMALL WESTWARD ADJUSTMENTS TO THE
FORECAST TRACK...THE CENTER OF IRENE IS STILL EXPECTED TO REMAIN
AROUND 175 TO 200 MILES OFFSHORE. TROPICAL STORM WATCHES OR WARNINGS
ARE NOT ANTICIPATED FOR LAND AREAS OF EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA.
HOWEVER...COASTAL RESIDENTS AND MARINE INTERESTS ARE URGED TO
STAY INFORMED OF THE LATEST FORECAST GIVEN THE PROXIMITY OF MAJOR
HURRICANE IRENE.

BY LATE MORNING...SUSTAINED TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS WILL BEGIN
DEVELOPING OVER THE WATERS BEYOND 20 NAUTICAL MILES FROM THE
TREASURE COAST...AND SPREAD NORTHWARD DURING THE DAY. ALSO BY LATE
MORNING AND WITHIN 20 NAUTICAL MILES OF THE TREASURE COAST...WIND
GUSTS OF TROPICAL STORM FORCE WILL BEGIN TO OCCUR AS THE OUTER
REACHES OF IRENE ENCROACH UPON THESE WATERS. TROPICAL STORM FORCE
WINDS...WHETHER SUSTAINED OFFSHORE OR GUSTY NEARSHORE...WILL
OVERSPREAD THE EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA COASTAL WATERS THROUGH FRIDAY
AFTERNOON AS IRENE MOVES NORTH. THE SEAS OFFSHORE ARE EXPECTED TO
BECOME DANGEROUS AND BUILD TO 20 TO 25 FEET...WITH NEARSHORE SEAS
BUILDING TO 12 TO 16 FEET.

A WIND ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL LAND AREAS OF EAST CENTRAL
FLORIDA FOR SUSTAINED WINDS TO NEAR 25 MPH WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS OF
35 TO 40 MPH POSSIBLE. NEAR THE COAST...TROPICAL STORM FORCE WIND
GUSTS ARE LIKELY OVER THE INTRACOASTAL WATERS AND BARRIER ISLANDS
TODAY INTO FRIDAY.

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE EAST CENTRAL
FLORIDA COAST. DANGEROUS POUNDING SURF WITH BREAKING WAVES OF 8 TO
12 FEET ARE LIKELY TO OCCUR ALONG AREA BEACHES. THE COMBINATION OF
LARGE LONG PERIOD SWELLS AND STRONG ONSHORE FLOW WILL PRODUCE
MODERATE TO SEVERE BEACH EROSION ALONG AREA BEACHES. ALSO...THE RIP
CURRENT RISK IS HIGH. THE RISK WILL INCREASE RAPIDLY TODAY AND
REMAIN A SIGNIFICANT CONCERN INTO THE WEEKEND.

LARGE BATTERING WAVES MAY ALSO POSE A HAZARD TO VULNERABLE PIERS
WHICH MAY BE DAMAGED FROM LARGE BREAKING WAVES.

THOUGH WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAINS ARE NOT EXPECTED...THERE WILL BE A LOW
THREAT FOR LOCALIZED FLOODING RAIN ALONG THE COAST LATER TODAY INTO
FRIDAY ASSOCIATED WITH PASSING SQUALLS. ISOLATED TORNADOES AND
WATERSPOUTS ALSO WILL BE POSSIBLE WITHIN OUTER RAIN BANDS...AND
MAINLY NEAR THE COAST.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

FOR MARINERS...SMALL CRAFT SHOULD REMAIN IN PORT WITH THEIR CRAFT
SECURED. INTERESTS AT PORTS...DOCKS...AND MARINAS...SHOULD BE ON
GUARD FOR CHANGES TO THE FORECAST.

LIFE GUARDS...BEACH PATROLS...AND BEACH STEWARDS SHOULD PREPARE
THE BEACHES FOR HIGH SURF...LARGE BREAKING WAVES...AND TROPICAL
STORM WIND GUSTS. FOR THOSE WHO DO VENTURE TO THE BEACH...IT IS
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO NOT ENTER THE HIGH SURF TODAY AND INTO THE
WEEKEND. TO DO SO WOULD GREATLY RISK YOUR LIFE.

DUE TO THE POTENTIAL FOR TROPICAL STORM FORCE WIND GUSTS...HIGH
PROFILE VEHICLES SHOULD TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTION WHEN TRAVELING ALONG
COASTAL ROUTES AND OVER CAUSEWAYS.

COASTAL RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS SHOULD SECURE ANY OUTDOOR OBJECTS
THAT ARE LOOSE AND LIGHT WEIGHT.
