27.8 NORTH...LONGITUDE 86.1 WEST OR ABOUT 245 MILES SOUTHEAST OF
BILOXI MISSISSIPPI. DENNIS IS MOVING NORTH NORTHWEST NEAR 15 MPH AND
THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TODAY.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NOW NEAR 145 MPH. DENNIS IS A CATEGORY
FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR SIMPSON SCALE. SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN

IN EXCESS OF 100 MPH ARE POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY IN JACKSON COUNTY.
FOR SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA...TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS OF 45 TO 55 MPH
ARE LIKELY OVER THE AREA TODAY AND THIS EVENING. WIND GUSTS TO 70
MPH ARE POSSIBLE OVER SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA THIS AFTERNOON AS
THE WESTERN PERIPHERY OF POWERFUL HURRICANE DENNIS MOVES BY THE AREA.
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS AND WIND GUSTS OF THIS MAGNITUDE MAY DOWN
TREE BRANCHES...RESULTING IN DOWNED POWER LINES AND POWER OUTAGES.
DRIVING MAY BECOME DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY ON ELEVATED ROADWAYS OR
OVER WATER CROSSINGS DUE TO THE STRONG GUSTY WINDS.

FOR COASTAL MISSISSIPPI...HURRICANE DENNIS IS EXPECTED TO MOVE
ASHORE AS A CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE WITH A DANGEROUS STORM SURGE. A
STORM SURGE POTENTIAL OF 14 TO 19 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVEL IS
LIKELY NEAR AND TO THE EAST OF WHERE HURRICANE DENNIS MAKES LANDFALL.
RESIDENTS OF THE MISSISSIPPI COAST...AND PARTICULARLY HARRISON AND
JACKSON COUNTIES...SHOULD BE ESPECIALLY VIGILANT FOR THIS EXTREME
STORM SURGE POTENTIAL AND TAKE NECESSARY ACTION TO PROTECT LIFE AND
PROPERTY.
FOR SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA...A 2 TO 3 FOOT STORM SURGE IS EXPECTED EAST
OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER...AND A 1 TO 3 FOOT STORM SURGE COULD OCCUR
IN LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN TODAY AND TONIGHT. SOME FLOODING OF LOW LYING
AREAS OUTSIDE HURRICANE PROTECTION LEVEES IS POSSIBLE OVER AREAS EAST
OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER...AND IN LOW LYING AREAS AROUND LAKE
PONTCHARTRAIN.

SQUALLS ASSOCIATED WITH HURRICANE DENNIS ARE ANTICIPATED TO BEGIN
THIS MORNING...WITH 3 TO 5 INCHES OF RAIN EXPECTED ON THE MISSISSIPPI
COAST. LESSER RAIN AMOUNTS WILL OCCUR OVER SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA.
LOCALLY HIGHER RAINFALL OF 5 TO 10 INCHES IS POSSIBLE ALONG THE
MISSISSIPPI COAST...ESPECIALLY THE EASTERN PORTION.
