SOUTHEAST ALABAMA AND INLAND PORTIONS OF THE EASTERN FLORIDA

THIS STATEMENT RECOMMENDS ACTION TO BE TAKEN FOR RESIDENTS OF THE
FLORIDA BIG BEND AND EASTERN PANHANDLE...SOUTHEAST ALABAMA...AND
SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL GEORGIA.
...WATCH AND WARNING INFORMATION...
THE TROPICAL STORM WARNING...TORNADO WATCH...AND FLOOD WATCH HAVE
ALL BE DISCONTINUED. THE INLAND TROPICAL STORM WIND WARNING REMAINS
IN EFFECT FOR SOUTHEAST ALABAMA THROUGH 7 PM CDT.
...STORM INFORMATION...
AT 4 PM CDT (5 PM EDT)...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM IVAN WAS
LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 33.1 NORTH...LONGITUDE 87.0 WEST...OR ABOUT 25
MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA. IVAN IS MOVING TOWARD
THE NORTH-NORTHEAST NEAR 14 MPH. A GRADUAL TURN TOWARD THE NORTHEAST
AND A DECREASE IN FORWARD SPEED ARE EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 24
HOURS. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE DECREASED TO NEAR 60 MPH WITH
HIGHER GUSTS. CONTINUED WEAKENING IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 24
HOURS. THE MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 980 MB...OR 28.94 INCHES.

THE OUTER RAIN BANDS OF TROPICAL STORM IVAN CONTINUE TO AFFECT
SOUTHEAST ALABAMA...EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE...
WESTERN AND CENTRAL PORTIONS OF THE FLORIDA BIG BEND...AND SOUTHWEST
GEORGIA. THESE RAIN BANDS MAY SPREAD INTO SOUTH CENTRAL GEORGIA AND
THE EASTERN BIG BEND THIS EVENING. STORM TOTAL RAINFALL SO FAR HAS
BEEN 6 TO 8 INCHES ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE EASTERN FLORIDA PANHANDLE
AND SOUTHEAST ALABAMA...AND 3 TO 5 INCHES ACROSS SOUTHWEST GEORGIA
AND WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE BIG BEND. AMOUNTS QUICKLY DECREASE
FURTHER EAST WITH UNDER AN INCH ACROSS MUCH OF SOUTH CENTRAL GEORGIA
AND PARTS OF THE EASTERN BIG BEND. NO MORE THAN AN INCH OF RAIN IS
EXPECTED IN THE REMAINING SPIRAL BANDS.
WIDESPREAD INLAND FLOODING IS NO LONGER EXPECTED. NUISANCE FLOODING
OR PONDING OF WATER REMAINS POSSIBLE IN LOCALIZED AREAS...
ESPECIALLY IN URBAN AND POOR DRAINAGE AREAS...AND NEAR CREEKS AND
STREAMS. HOWEVER...SHARP RISES WILL OCCUR ON SOME MAIN STEM RIVERS
OVER THE NEXT DAY OR TWO. SOME RIVERS AND CREEKS IN SOUTHWEST
GEORGIA MAY APPROACH MINOR FLOOD LEVEL. ADDITIONAL HEAVY RAINFALL IN
THE HEADWATERS OF THE CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER FROM IVAN MAY CREATE
SIGNIFICANT RISES ON THE CHATTAHOOCHEE AND APALACHICOLA RIVERS NEXT
WEEK. THE FOLLOWING BASINS COULD BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED BY IVAN.
IN ALABAMA...THE CHOCTAWHATCHEE AND PEA RIVER BASINS.
IN FLORIDA...THE CHOCTAWHATCHEE...APALACHICOLA...CHIPOLA AND
OCHLOCKONEE RIVERS.

FEET ABOVE THE SURFACE...IS REPORTING WINDS OF 30 TO 32 KNOTS. THE
OFFSHORE GULF BUOYS ARE OBSERVING SUSTAINED WINDS OF 23 KNOTS WITH
GUSTS TO 27 TO 29 KNOTS.

OVERNIGHT AS IT MOVES NORTHEAST ACROSS ALABAMA. IT WILL LIKELY
BECOME A DEPRESSION ON FRIDAY. PERIODS OF SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO
40 MPH WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS TO 50 MPH WILL AFFECT MAINLY SOUTHEAST
ALABAMA THROUGH THE EARLY EVENING HOURS...BEFORE SUBSIDING
OVERNIGHT. TROPICAL STORM FORCE GUSTS WILL REMAIN POSSIBLE ACROSS
SOUTHWEST GEORGIA DURING THIS TIME AS WELL IN ISOLATED HEAVY RAIN
SHOWERS.
...TORNADO THREAT...
MANY TORNADOES HAVE BEEN REPORTED ACROSS THE REGION IN THE OUTER RAIN
BANDS OF IVAN SINCE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL
REMAIN POSSIBLE INTO THIS EVENING. HOWEVER...THE NUMBER OF TORNADIC
STORMS HAS DECREASED MARKEDLY OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF HOURS AND THIS
TREND IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE. FOR THIS REASON...THE TORNADO WATCH
WAS CANCELLED.
...STORM SURGE FLOOD AND STORM TIDE IMPACTS...
TIDES HAVE BEEN RUNNING ABOUT 1 TO 2 FEET ABOVE NORMAL THIS
AFTERNOON ALONG MOST OF THE COAST...WITH 2 TO 3 FOOT DEPARTURES IN
THE APALACHEE BAY. COASTAL WATERS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN ELEVATED AT
THESE DEPARTURES THROUGH THIS EVENING. SEAS AT THE OFFSHORE BUOYS
ARE STILL RUNNING 11 TO 13 FEET. LARGE BREAKERS AND SWELLS WILL
CONTINUE TO POUND THE COASTLINE THROUGH THE DAY.

ON FRIDAY.
