POINT NY...INCLUDING THE WATERS OF LONG ISLAND SOUND AND NEW YORK
HARBOR.
A FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR THE ENTIRE TRI-STATE REGION FROM 12
MIDNIGHT TO 12 NOON SUNDAY.
...STORM INFORMATION...
AT 500 PM EDT...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE CHARLEY WAS LOCATED NEAR
LATITUDE 36.0 NORTH...LONGITUDE 77.0 WEST OR ABOUT 75 MILES
SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF NORFOLK VIRGINIA.
CHARLEY IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHEAST NEAR 30 MPH. A GRADUAL
TURN TO THE NORTHEAST IS EXPECTED ON SUNDAY. ON THIS TRACK...CHARLEY
WILL MOVE NEAR AND ALONG THE NORTHEAST COAST...AND IS EXPECTED TO
TRACK ACROSS THE CENTRAL PARTS OF LONG ISLAND AND SOUTHERN
CONNECTCIUT ON SUNDAY MORNING.
...PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE
EXPECTED WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS. RESIDENTS SHOULD BEGIN TO
PREPARE FOR THE ONSET OF WINDS IN EXCESS OF 39 MPH...SUCH AS
SECURING LOOSE OUTDOOR FURNITURE AND OTHER OBJECTS.
...STORM SURGE FLOOD AND STORM TIDE IMPACTS...
STORM SURGES AHEAD OF CHARLEY MAY RANGE FROM 2 TO 3 FEET ABOVE
NORMAL. WHILE WE ARE APPROACHING ASTRONOMICAL HIGH TIDES AS A RESULT
OF A NEW MOON...THESE SURGES ARE EXPECTED TO ARRIVE DURING THE LOWER
OF THE 2 HIGH TIDE CYCLES...THUS MINIMIZING THE THREAT FOR COASTAL
FLOODING. HOWEVER...MINOR TO LOCALLY MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING CAN
BE EXPECTED...ESPECIALLY IN THOSE AREAS MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO COASTAL
FLOODING SUCH AS THE BACK BAYS ALONG LONG ISLAND'S SOUTH SHORE.
...WIND IMPACTS...
SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH OR GREATER WILL BEGIN TO ARRIVE IN
THE REGION AFTER MIDNIGHT TONIGHT AND CONTINUE THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY
MORNING. A FEW WIND GUSTS OF UP TO 55 MPH ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. WINDS
OF THESE SPEEDS MAY DOWN SOME TREES...TREE LIMBS AND POWER LINES.
THIS MAY RESULT IN SCATTERED AREAS OF POWER OUTAGES...ESPECIALLY IN
THOSE AREAS THAT HAVE RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF RAINFALL IN
THE PAST SEVERAL WEEKS.
...RAINFALL...
PERIODS OF HEAVY RAINFALL WILL PRECEDE AND ACCOMPANY A WEAKENING
CHARLEY AS IT MOVES ACROSS THE REGION. RAINFALL AMOUNTS WILL
GENERALLY BE 2 TO 4 INCHES. SOME LOCAL AMOUNTS MAY APPROACH 5 INCHES
RIGHT ALONG THE PATH OF CHARLEY.
...MARINE INFORMATION...
SEAS WILL INCREASE TO 7 TO 11 FEET FOR LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY SUNDAY
MORNING. THIS WILL RESULT IN MODERATE BEACH EROSION...ESPECIALLY
ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE OF LONG ISLAND.
...RIP CURRENT INFORMATION...
AN INCREASING THREAT OF RIP CURRENTS WILL CONTINUE ALONG THE COAST
THROUGH SUNDAY. THESE DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS WILL BE LIFE
THREATENING TO ANYONE WHO ENTERS THE WATER.
...NEXT UPDATE...
THE NEXT LOCAL STATEMENT ON HURRICANE CHARLEY WILL BE ISSUED BY
MIDNIGHT.
