THE COASTAL WATERS FROM BONITA BEACH TO BAYPORT...CHARLOTTE HARBOR

AT 7PM EDT...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE CHARLEY WAS LOCATED NEAR
LATITUDE 27.7 NORTH...LONGITUDE 81.8 WEST JUST SOUTH OF FORT MEADE
FLORIDA OR 65 MILES SOUTH SOUTHWEST OF ORLANDO. CHARLEY WAS MOVING TO
THE NORTH NORTHEAST NEAR 25 MPH...WITH A GRADUAL INCREASE IN FORWARD
SPEED EXPECTED LATER TONIGHT. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE
DECREASED TO AROUND 115 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS...AND A FURTHER
DECREASE IN WIND SPEEDS IS EXPECTED THROUGH THE NIGHT. MINIMUM
CENTRAL PRESSURE WAS 950 MB...OR 28.05 INCHES.
HURRICANE CHARLEY MADE LANDFALL AT 345 PM EDT...AT CAYO COSTA...A
BARRIER ISLAND JUST WEST OF CAPE CORAL. AT 435 PM EDT...WIND GUSTS OF
97 KNOTS OR 111 MPH WERE MEASURED AT THE PUNTA GORDA AIRPORT BEFORE
THE INSTRUMENT FAILED. ESTIMATED WIND GUSTS FROM THE EMA OFFICE IN
ARCADIA FLORIDA WERE 104 MPH.
...STORM SURGE FLOOD AND STORM TIDE IMPACTS...
THE STORM SURGE THAT OCCURRED SOUTH OF WHERE HURRICANE CHARLEY MADE
LANDFALL WAS INITIALLY ESTIMATED AROUND 10 FEET. FOR THE REMAINDER OF
THE OVERNIGHT HOURS...STORM SURGE WILL DIMINISH AND NOT BE A
FACTOR...BUT TIDES GENERALLY WILL BE 1 TO 3 FEET ABOVE NORMAL.
...WIND IMPACTS...
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS AND GUSTS WILL GENERALLY LAST ANOTHER 1 TO 2
HOURS WITH THE STRONGEST WINDS IN THE VICINITY OF THE CENTER OF
CHARLEY. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS AND GUSTS ARE OCCURRING NOW
ACROSS A LARGE PART OF BOTH SOUTHWEST AND WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA. THESE
WINDS WILL LAST ANOTHER 3 TO 5 HOURS WITH THE HIGHEST WINDS EAST OF
INTERSTATE 75.
ALTHOUGH CHARLEY HAS MADE LANDFALL...THE HURRICANE REMAINS A
DANGEROUS HURRICANE. A SWATH OF DAMAGE CAN BE EXPECTED
WITH THE CENTER OF THE STORM AS IT MOVES ACROSS THE FLORIDA
PENINSULA.
...DANGEROUS WINDS WILL PRODUCE A SWATH OF DAMAGE...
...DESTRUCTION OF MOBILE HOMES NEAR THE CENTER OF THE STORM IS
STILL POSSIBLE...
...NATURAL DAMAGE...
ALL TREES WITH ROTTING BASES WILL BECOME UPROOTED OR SNAP. NEARLY ALL
LARGE BRANCHES WILL SNAP...AND MAJOR DAMAGE CAN BE EXPECTED TO
CITRUS GROVES...INCLUDING NUMEROUS UPROOTED TREES...MOST COMMON WHERE
THE GROUND IS SATURATED.
RESIDENTS IN FLOOD PRONE AREAS SHOULD RUSH TO COMPLETION PREPARATIONS
TO PROTECT THEIR PROPERTY...THEN MOVE TO A PLACE OF SAFETY.
IN RURAL LOCATIONS...SMALL STREAMS AND CREEKS WILL SURPASS BANK
FULL FOR A FEW HOURS.
URBAN AREAS WILL SEE SIGNIFICANT FLOODING AS RAINFALL OF UP TO 8
INCHES IS EXPECTED.
HEAVY RAIN WILL CAUSE RIVERS TO SWELL LONG AFTER THE STORM PASSES.
PERSONS LIVING ALONG RIVERS SHOULD MONITOR EVENTS THROUGH EARLY NEXT
WEEK.
...INITIAL DAMAGE INFORMATION...
SEVERAL TORNADOES AND WATERSPOUTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED ACROSS THE AREA.
MANY HAVE PRODUCED SMALL CONCENTRATED DAMAGE AREAS.
HURRICANE WINDS HAVE KNOCKED NUMEROUS TREES AND POWER LINES DOWN.
MANY MOBILE HOMES AND OUTBUILDINGS HAVE SUFFERED MAJOR DAMAGE. ONE
SHELTER IN DESOTO COUNTY SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE...LEAVING A
THOUSAND PEOPLE EXPOSED TO THE STORM. ON CAPTIVA ISLAND...AN
ESTIMATED 160 CONDOMINIUMS HAVE BEEN TOTALLY DESTROYED AND ANOTHER
160 HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY DAMAGED.
THE NEXT HURRICANE LOCAL STATEMENT FROM THE TAMPA BAY AREA FORECAST
OFFICE WILL BE ISSUED AROUND 10 PM EDT.
