THIS STATEMENT IS FOR RESIDENTS OF THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES IN
NORTHEAST SOUTH CAROLINA...GEORGETOWN AND HORRY...AND IN SOUTHEAST
NORTH CAROLINA...BRUNSWICK COUNTY.

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR THE COAST OF SOUTH
CAROLINA AND THE COAST OF NORTH CAROLINA AS FAR NORTH AS CAPE FEAR.
A TROPICAL STORM WATCH MEANS WINDS OF 40 TO 73 MPH ARE POSSIBLE
WITHIN 36 HOURS.
A FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR THE COASTAL PLAIN OF SOUTH CAROLINA
AND NORTH CAROLINA.

AT 5 AM EDT...THE EYE OF HURRICANE CHARLEY WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE
23.9 NORTH...LONGITUDE 82.9 WEST OR ABOUT 85 MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST
OF KEY WEST FLORIDA.
CHARLEY WAS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 18 MPH..A GRADUAL
TURN TO THE NORTH IS EXPECTED TODAY.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 110 MPH...175
KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SOME STRENGHTENING IS POSSIBLE AND
CHARLEY IS FORECAST TO BE A MAJOR HURRICANE AS IT APPROACHES THE
FLORIDA WEST COAST.
AS CHARLIE MOVES INLAND AND NORTH...WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY
DECREASE TO TROPICAL STORM FORCE AS THE STORM CROSSES THE CAROLINAS
ON SATURDAY.

EVERY HOUSEHOLD SHOULD HAVE A PLAN OF ACTION WHEN A HURRICANE OR
TROPICAL STORM THREATENS. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ONE...NOW IS THE TIME TO
FORMULATE ONE. WHEN MAKING YOUR PLAN...GIVE FULL CONSIDERATION TO
WHETHER YOU SHOULD LEAVE OR STAY IF A WARNING IS ISSUED FOR YOUR
LOCATION. RESIDENTS SHOULD FOLLOW THE ADVICE OF LOCAL EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT AND OTHER GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.
POWER OUTAGES ARE POSSIBLE IF TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS DEVELOP.

CAN BE EATEN WITHOUT COOKING OR HEATING. CHECK FOR ADEQUATE SUPPLIES

LANTERNS AND A BATTERY POWERED RADIO. HAVE A SUPPLY OF SPARE

BOAT OWNERS SHOULD TAKE ACTION NOW TO REMOVE THEIR BOATS FROM THE
WATER OR SECURE THEM FOR TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS. IF
POSSIBLE...BOATS SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE WATER AND MOVED TO A
SECURE LOCATION.
AVIATION INTERESTS SHOULD BEGIN PREPARATIONS NOW FOR RELOCATING
AIRCRAFT SHOULD A WARNING BE ISSUED.
IT IS STILL TOO EARLY TO BE SPECIFIC ABOUT THE EXACT EFFECTS OF
HURRICANE CHARLEY BECAUSE TRACK ERRORS CAN BE MORE THAN A HUNDRED
MILES AT 36 HOURS. ALL CITIZENS IN THE AFFECTED AREAS SHOULD CONTINUE
TO MONITOR THIS STORM VERY CLOSELY.

WINDS ACROSS THE AREA WILL GRADUALLY INCREASE TONIGHT. ON SATURDAY
MORNING... TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS...IN EXCESS OF 40 MPH...ARE
EXPECTED TO SPREAD INTO NORTHEAST SOUTH CAROLINA...AND INTO
SOUTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
...STORM SURGE...
BASED ON THE CURRENT FORECAST TRACK FOR CHARLEY...WINDS WILL BE
ONSHORE NORTH TO CAPE FEAR. WITH THE CURRENT PROJECTED STRENGTH AND
LOCATION OF THE STORM...TIDES COULD BE 2 TO 4 FEET ABOVE NORMAL.
MODERATE BEACH EROSION IS POSSIBLE WITH THIS STORM.
...SEAS AND RIP CURRENTS...
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS AND HIGH SEAS WILL DEVELOP OVER THE
COASTAL WATERS FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY. MARINERS SHOULD MAKE
PREPARATIONS TO STAY IN PORT. THERE IS A MODERATE RISK FOR RIP
CURRENTS TODAY...AND DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS WILL BE LIKELY ON
SATURDAY.

WITH THE RAINFALL DURING THE PAST 24 HOURS FROM THE REMNANTS OF
BONNIE...THE GROUND IS ALREADY SATURATED IN SOME AREAS. AN ADDITIONAL
4 TO 8 INCHES IS POSSIBLE WITH CHARLEY. FLOODING IS POSSIBLE IN
AREAS WITH POOR DRAINAGE...SMALL STREAMS AND LOW LYING AREAS.
