Areas affected...Lower/Middle Ohio Valley
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 388...
Valid 162042Z - 162215Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 388
continues.
SUMMARY...Strong to severe thunderstorm coverage is increasing
across WW #388, with a threat of damaging wind and isolated large
hail continuing into the evening.
DISCUSSION...Latest regional radar mosaic and visible satellite
imagery continue to show an increase in areal coverage of strong to
severe thunderstorms across WW #388. The environment over the area
continues to be characterized by moderate to strong instability
(e.g., 2000-3000 J/kg of MLCAPE per SPC mesoanalysis) and effective
bulk shear values of 25-40 knots (strongest north of the Ohio
River). Thus far, the most numerous activity has occurred across
portions of southern Indiana where a large cluster of storms has
produced near-severe hail over the last hour or so. While storms
have remained more scattered farther west over southern Illinois and
southeast Missouri -- with a recent report of 1 inch hail in Carter
County, Missouri -- visible satellite imagery suggests areal
coverage of strong/severe thunderstorms will continue to increase
over this area over the next few hours.
Primary severe threat continues to be damaging winds and isolated
near-severe hail, with a low...but non-zero tornado threat
continuing into the evening.
