Beginning Today, January 29, the KOHX WSR-88D radar operated by
the National Weather Service in Nashville, TN will be down for
approximately five days through Friday, February 2 to install an
important technological upgrade. A crew will install a new signal
processor, which replaces obsolete technology, improves processing
speed and data quality, provides added functionality and supports
IT security.
This is the first of four major upgrades to the WSR-88D, known as
service life extension projects, which are planned in stages over
the next five years to replace and refurbish major components of
the 20+ year old WSR-88Ds and to keep them operational into the
2030s. The $150M investment is being made by the three
organizations that use these radars: The National Weather Service,
United States Air Force and Federal Aviation Administration. The
other service life etension projects include refurbishing the
transmitter, pedestal and equipment shelter.
During the outage, WSR-88D radar data can be obtained from nearby
radars including Fort Campbell, KY (KHPX), Louisville, KY (KLVX),
Morristown, TN (KMRX), Huntsville, AL (KHTX), Memphis, TN (KNQA)
and Paducah, KY (KPAH). The Terminal Doppler Weather Radar site
at Nasvhille, TN (TBNA) will also be available. For direct access
to any of the surrounding WSR-88D radar sites go to

The KOHX WSR-88D is part of a network of 159 operational radars.
The Radar Operations Center in Norman, OK provides lifecycle
