...SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK CONTINUES TENNESSEE WITH LIGHTNING
AWARENESS DAY...

WHEN THUNDER ROARS...GO INDOORS!

NATIONWIDE IN 2011 26 PEOPLE WERE KILLED BY LIGHTNING.
FORTUNATELY...NONE OF THOSE KILLED WERE IN THE VOLUNTEER STATE.
SINCE 1959 3974 PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE U.S. AS A
RESULT OF BEING STRUCK. 140 OF THOSE KILLED WERE IN TENNESSEE
PLACING THE VOLUNTEER STATE IN THE TOP 5 FOR LIGHTNING FATALITIES.

LIGHTNING IS A YEAR ROUND THREAT IN THE MID-STATE...BUT THE MOST
FREQUENT OCCURRENCE WILL BE DURING THE LATE SPRING AND SUMMER
MONTHS.  IN AN AVERAGE YEAR 4 TENNESSEANS WILL LOSE THEIR LIVES TO
LIGHTNING AND AN ADDITIONAL 10 WILL BE INJURED.

IF YOU CAN SEE LIGHTNING AND HEAR THUNDER WHILE OUTDOORS...YOU ARE
IN IMMEDIATE DANGER OF BEING STRUCK.  MOVE INSIDE A WELL CONSTRUCTED
HOUSE...A LARGE BUILDING OR A  VEHICLE. STAY AWAY FROM ELECTRICAL
APPLIANCES AND DO NOT USE A CORDED TELEPHONE.

SOME ADDITIONAL LIGHTNING SAFETY TIPS INCLUDE...

IF YOU ARE IN A BOAT...GET OFF THE WATER AND INTO A SUBSTANTIAL
BUILDING...OR AT LEAST INTO AN ENCLOSED AND ALL-METAL VEHICLE WITH
THE WINDOWS UP. IF YOU'RE CAUGHT IN AN OPEN METAL BOAT...LIE DOWN IN
THE BOAT WITH CUSHIONS BETWEEN YOU AND THE METAL SIDES AND BOTTOM.

IF YOU ARE CAUGHT OUTDOORS...RUN INDOORS IMMEDIATELY.

MOVE AWAY FROM MOTORCYCLES...SCOOTERS...GOLF CARTS...BICYCLES...
TRACTORS...AND OTHER METAL FARM EQUIPMENT. AVOID WIRE FENCES...
CLOTHES LINES...METAL PIPES...DRAINS...RAILROAD TRACKS...AND
OTHER METALLIC OBJECTS.

TOMORROW IS TORNADO DRILL DAY.  THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL BE
CONDUCTING A TORNADO DRILL AROUND 930 WEDNESDAY MORNING IN LIEU OF OUR
ROUTINE WEEKLY WEATHER RADIO TEST.
