...ISOLATED SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING...
A SURFACE LOW PRESSURE AREA WAS LOCATED OVER SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMA
AT MID-MORNING...WITH A WARM FRONT EXTENDING EAST ACROSS SOUTHERN
ARKANSAS AND NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI. THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL
MOVE NORTHEAST AND INTO THE BOOTHEEL AREA OF MISSOURI DURING THE
AFTERNOON WITH THE WARM FRONT LIFTING NORTH OF THE MID STATE AND THE
COLD FRONT WORKING ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER BY 4 PM CDT. THIS
POSITIONING WILL PLACE MIDDLE TENNESSEE IN THE WARM SECTOR DURING
THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING...WHEN SURFACE HEATING IS AT ITS MAXIMUM.
AS THE COLD FRONT MOVES EAST THERE COULD BE A FEW STORMS IN MIDDLE
TENNESSEE THAT WILL PRODUCE DAMAGING WINDS AND LARGE HAIL...AND
ISOLATED TORNADOES DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS. THE
WEST HALF OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE APPEARS TO BE MORE PRONE TO THE
SEVERE WEATHER THREAT...BUT EASTERN AREAS COULD ALSO SEE ISOLATED
SEVERE STORMS...ESPECIALLY DUIRING THE EVENING.
APRIL AND MAY ARE PEAK SEVERE WEATHER MONTHS IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE.
THE FOLLOWING ARE A FEW SAFETY RULES...
IF YOU ARE CAUGHT OUTSIDE...SEEK SHELTER IN A NEARBY REINFORCED
BUILDING. AS A LAST RESORT...SEEK SHELTER IN A CULVERT...DITCH OR LOW
SPOT AND COVER YOUR HEAD WITH YOUR HANDS.
THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE DURING A TORNADO IS IN A BASEMENT. GET UNDER A
WORKBENCH OR OTHER PIECE OF STURDY FURNITURE. IF NO BASEMENT IS
AVAILABLE...SEEK SHELTER ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF THE BUILDING IN AN
INTERIOR HALLWAY OR ROOM SUCH AS A CLOSET. USE BLANKETS OR PILLOWS TO
COVER YOUR BODY AND ALWAYS STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS.
IF IN MOBILE HOMES OR VEHICLES...EVACUATE THEM AND GET INSIDE A
SUBSTANTIAL SHELTER. IF NO SHELTER IS AVAILABLE...LIE FLAT IN THE
NEAREST DITCH OR OTHER LOW SPOT AND COVER YOUR HEAD WITH YOUR HANDS.
PLEASE STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO FOR LATER STATEMENTS.
