PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN
620 AM CDT MON JUL 21 2008
...TEMPERATURES FLARE...BUT YOU CAN BEAT THE HEAT...
AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE LAST PART OF JULY...DAYTIME TEMPERATURES IN
THE MID 90S ARE EXPECTED TO BECOME INCREASINGLY COMMON FOR MUCH OF
THE MID STATE. AS IS USUAL FOR THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY...
HUMIDITIES WILL ALSO BE HIGH...LEADING TO HEAT INDEX VALUES CLOSE
TO 100 DEGREES...ON THE HOTTEST DAYS.
THE FIRST PART OF THE SUMMER HAD RELATIVELY MILD SUMMER
WEATHER...AND THIS FLARE UP IN TEMPERATURES WILL DEFINITELY BE
NOTICEABLE. SO...THERE'S NO BETTER TIME THAN...RIGHT NOW...TO
REVIEW HOT WEATHER SAFETY RULES.
THE MAIN THING TO REMEMBER IS...IF POSSIBLE...TO LIMIT YOUR TIME
OUTSIDE ON THE HOTTEST DAYS.
THOSE MOST VULNERABLE TO THE EFFECTS OF THE HEAT ARE THE VERY
YOUNG...THE ELDERLY...AND THOSE WITH HEALTH PROBLEMS...LIKE ASTHMA.
IF YOU HAVE TO BE OUTSIDE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME...BE SURE
TO...
...DRINK PLENTY OF NON ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES...
...WEAR LIGHT COLORED...LOOSE FITTING...CLOTHING...
...WEAR SUNSCREEN TO PREVENT SUNBURN...
...TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS...TO PREVENT HEAT EXHAUSTION AND SUNSTROKE...
...BE AWARE OF THE WARNING SIGNS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION...INCLUDING...
...COOL...MOIST SKIN...
...PROFUSE SWEATING...
...FAINTNESS OR DIZZINESS...
...HEADACHE OR NAUSEA...
...BE AWARE OF THE WARNING SIGNS OF SUNSTROKE...INCLUDING...
...FLUSHED...HOT...AND DRY SKIN...
...DIZZINESS...CONFUSION...OR HALLUCINATIONS...
...AND HYPERVENTILATION...
IT IS ALSO A GOOD IDEA TO KEEP A CHECK ON FRIENDS...AND NEIGHBORS...
TO ENSURE THEY ARE COPING WELL WITH THE HEAT. SOMETIMES...LENDING A
HELPING HAND...CAN MEAN LENDING SOMEONE A FAN. NEVER...EVER...LEAVE
CHILDREN ALONE...IN A CLOSED VEHICLE...WHERE TEMPERATURES CAN
QUICKLY SOAR TO DEADLY LEVELS.
