...TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT WAVE CONTINUES...

A HEAT ADVISORY IS CURRENTLY IN EFFECT FOR MIDDLE TENNESSEE WEST
OF THE CUMBERLAND PLATEAU THROUGH 7 PM THURSDAY. WE EXPECT HIGH TEMPERATURES
TO REACH 102 TO 104 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON. COMBINED WITH THE HUMIDITY...
THAT WILL PUSH HEAT INDEX VALUES INTO THE 104 TO 109 DEGREE RANGE.
ANYONE WHO CANNOT STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENT MUST TAKE
PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT HEAT RELATED ILLNESSES.

THUS FAR THIS MONTH...WE HAVE HAD 12 DAYS OF 100 DEGREE PLUS HEAT.
IF FORECASTS HOLD TRUE...WE WILL ADD 2 MORE DAYS TO THIS TOTAL.
THE PREVIOUS RECORD FOR THE MOST 100 DEGREE PLUS DAYS WAS 11 SET
IN JUNE OF 1952.

THE RECORD TEMPERATURE FOR NASHVILLE FOR THIS DATE IS 100 DEGREES
SET IN 1983. WE WILL LIKELY BREAK THIS RECORD WITH AN EXPECTED
HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 104 DEGREES FOR NASHVILLE THIS AFTERNOON.
THE RECORD TEMPERATURE OF 95 DEGREES IN 1983 FOR CROSSVILLE IS
ALSO LIKELY TO BE BROKEN.

CURRENTLY...AUGUST 2007 IN NASHVILLE IS AVERAGING MORE THAN 9 DEGREES
ABOVE NORMAL. THE REALLY IMPRESSIVE THING ABOUT THIS IS THAT THIS
IS MORE THAN 4 DEGREES HIGHER THAN THE HOTTEST AUGUST ON RECORD
WHICH WAS AUGUST 1995.

OF COURSE...ALONG WITH THE UNPRECEDENTED HEAT IS THE LACK OF RAINFALL.
NASHVILLE IS CURRENTLY MORE THAN 14 INCHES BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL.
AREAS TO THE SOUTH OF NASHVILLE ARE MORE THAN 20 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL RAINFALL. THIS HAS RESULTED IN THE AREA BEING CLASSIFIED AS
BEING UNDER EXTREME TO EXCEPTIONAL DROUGHT CONDITIONS. WITH ONLY A
SLIM POSSIBILITY OF RAIN THIS WEEKEND...THIS SITUATION IS NOT
LIKELY TO IMPROVE ANY TIME SOON.
