PUBLIC SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0315 AM CDT WED MAY 10 2006
...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED OVER PARTS OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI
RIVER VALLEY AND MID SOUTH INTO THE TENNESSEE AND LOWER OHIO RIVER
VALLEYS LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT...
THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OK IS FORECASTING THE
DEVELOPMENT OF WIDESPREAD SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS INCLUDING A FEW
STRONG AND DAMAGING TORNADOES OVER PARTS OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI
RIVER VALLEY AND MID SOUTH INTO THE TENNESSEE AND LOWER OHIO RIVER
VALLEYS LATER TODAY AND TONIGHT.
THE AREAS MOST LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE THIS ACTIVITY INCLUDE
WESTERN AND NORTHERN ALABAMA
EASTERN ARKANSAS
WESTERN KENTUCKY
NORTHEASTERN LOUISIANA
MISSISSIPPI
WESTERN AND MIDDLE TENNESSEE
SURROUNDING THE MODERATE RISK AREA...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS FROM THE TEXAS COAST NORTHWARD INTO THE
SOUTHERN GREAT LAKES REGION AND EASTWARD ACROSS THE GULF COAST AND
SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS.
RATHER VOLATILE SITUATION APPEARS TO BE TAKING SHAPE OVER MUCH OF
THE MID SOUTH AND ADJACENT REGIONS TODAY WITH CONDITIONS BECOMING
FAVORABLE FOR SIGNIFICANT SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. A BROAD TROUGH
ALOFT WILL SPREAD VERY STRONG WESTERLY MID LEVEL WINDS ACROSS MUCH
OF THE MID SOUTH AND LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY TODAY. AHEAD OF
THIS SYSTEM...A SURFACE COLD FRONT WILL ADVANCE SOUTHEASTWARD INTO
THE LOWER OHIO AND LOWER MISSISSIPPI AND TENNESSEE RIVER VALLEYS
TODAY.
THOUGH THUNDERSTORMS LATE TUESDAY NIGHT AND EARLY THIS MORNING HAVE
PRODUCED A COOLER AIR MASS IN THEIR WAKE ACROSS PORTIONS OF THIS
REGION...ABUNDANT GULF MOISTURE IS IN PLACE JUST DOWNSTREAM ACROSS
LOUISIANA AND SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI. EXPECT AN AXIS OF WARM AND VERY
HUMID AIR WILL DEVELOP NORTHWARD ACROSS THE MID SOUTH AND THE LOWER
MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. THIS WILL SUPPORT
VERY STRONG INSTABILITY AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT...AND
EXPECT RAPID SEVERE THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THIS AREA DURING
THE MID TO LATE AFTERNOON. STORMS WILL QUICKLY DEVELOP INTO
SUPERCELLS WITH ENHANCED THREAT OF TORNADOES AND VERY LARGE AND
POSSIBLY DAMAGING HAIL. THE TORNADO THREAT WILL BE GREATEST NEAR
RESIDUAL SURFACE BOUNDARIES LEFT OVER FROM THE MORNING STORMS. IT
APPEARS CONDITIONS WILL FAVOR A FEW STRONG AND DAMAGING TORNADOES
LATER TODAY AND THIS EVENING. ACTIVITY MAY EVOLVE INTO ONE OR MORE
LARGE CLUSTERS THROUGH THE EVENING AND SPREAD WIDESPREAD SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS OVER A LARGER AREA OVERNIGHT.
THOSE IN THE THREATENED AREA ARE URGED TO REVIEW SEVERE WEATHER
SAFETY RULES AND TO LISTEN TO RADIO...TELEVISION...AND NOAA WEATHER
RADIO FOR POSSIBLE WATCHES...WARNINGS...AND STATEMENTS LATER TODAY.
