PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN
710 AM CDT THU OCT 13 2005
FIRE WEATHER/FIRE PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK CONTINUES TODAY WITH A
LOOK AT RED FLAG WARNING...EXTREME FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS.
IN COOPERATION WITH FEDERAL AND STATE LAND MANAGEMENT AGENCIES SUCH
AS THE TENNESSEE DIVISION OF FORESTRY...CHEROKEE NATIONAL
FOREST...AND GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK...THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE WILL ISSUE A RED FLAG WARNING TO HIGHLIGHT EXTREME
FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS WHEN WARRANTED. RED FLAG WARNINGS ARE ISSUED
WHENEVER WEATHER CONDITIONS COMBINE TO MAKE FIRE DANGER HIGH.
THUNDERSTORMS WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF RAINFALL CAN ALSO CAUSE
WILDFIRES. WHEN FOREST FUELS ARE DRY...CLOUD TO GROUND LIGHTNING CAN
IGNITE TREES AND BRUSH TO START FOREST FIRES.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE ALERT TO THE INCREASED THREAT OF WILDFIRES
DURING RED FLAG WARNING CONDITIONS...ESPECIALLY THOSE WHOSE HOMES
ARE IN FORESTED AREAS...OR THOSE PLANNING ON VISITING AREA FORESTS.
KEEP IN TOUCH WITH LOCAL LAND MANAGEMENT AGENCIES ABOUT POSSIBLE
BURN BANS AND PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS. ALSO...STAY ABREAST OF THE
LATEST FORECAST FROM YOUR NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BY LISTENING TO
NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR FAVORITE RADIO AND TV STATIONS.
CHILDREN CAN ALSO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN PREVENTING FIRES BY
REMEMBERING THE FOLLOWING SAFETY TIPS:
1. NEVER PLAY WITH MATCHES...LIGHTERS...FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS OR ANY
FIRE.
2. TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT FIRE PREVENTION.
3. TELL AN ADULT RIGHT AWAY IF YOU SEE SMOKE...FIND MATCHES...OR SEE
SOMEONE PLAYING WITH MATCHES.
4. STAY CALM DURING AN EMERGENCY AND LISTEN TO INSTRUCTIONS FROM AN
ADULT.
REMEMBER...SMOKEY BEAR NEEDS YOUR HELP TO SPREAD THE WORD
THAT...ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT WILDFIRES.
THE LAST TOPIC DURING FIRE WEATHER/FIRE PREVENTION WEEK WILL BE...OUR
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY FIRE WEATHER SEASONS.
