.AREAS AFFECTED...
This local statement provides information and recommended actions
for people on Yap, Fais, and Ulithi.

.WATCHES/WARNINGS...
The tropical storm warning for Woleai and Faraulep is cancelled.
Tropical storm conditions have ended.

A tropical storm warning and a typhoon watch remain in effect for
Fais and Ulithi. Damaging winds of 39 mph or more are occurring.

A typhoon watch remains in effect for Yap.

.STORM INFORMATION...

At 700 AM CHST...2100 UTC...the center of Tropical Storm Malakas was
located near Latitude 10.1 degrees North and Longitude 141.5 degrees
East, moving northwest at 18 mph. Maximum sustained winds have
increased to 65 mph.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
TS Malakas has become much better-organized, and is now intensifying.
Malakas is expected to become a typhoon by this evening, by which
time it should be past Yap and moving to the northwest away from
Yap State.

.NEXT UPDATE...
The next local statement will be issued by the National Weather
Service at 300 PM this afternoon, or earlier if needed.

...ULITHI AND FAIS...

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
TS Malakas is passing Ulithi and Fais this morning. Damaging winds
are in progress and will persist into the afternoon or early
evening. Stay in a sturdy shelter and remain there until given the
all clear. Small craft should remain in safe harbor. Postpone any
inter-island travel.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Damaging northwest winds of 35 to 45 mph will shift to southwest
by afternoon before falling below damaging levels of 39 mph this
evening, then decreasing to 20 to 30 mph overnight.

...SEAS...
Seas of 11 and 14 feet today will slowly subside tonight and Monday
as Malakas moves away from the region and winds decrease.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could result in coastal inundation of 2 to 3 feet along
windward reefs and shorelines. Dangerous pounding surf could also
result in coastal erosion. There is a potential of 3 to 6 inches of
additional rainfall through Monday.

...YAP...

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A brief period of daamaging winds remains possible on Yap this
afternoon, but is becoming less possible as Malakas continues to
move northwest. The typhoon watch will likely be cancelled later
this morning unless Malakas undergoes a drastic change in motion
or intensity. Residents remain prepared until the all clear is
given.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Damaging tropical storm force west to northwest winds are still
possible but not likely in the next few hours.

...SEAS...
Seas of 9 to 12 feet are possible as Malakas passes today. Seas
should subside slowly tonight and Monday as Malakas moves away
from the region and winds decrease.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could result in coastal inundation of 1 to 2 feet along
windward reefs and shorelines. Dangerous pounding surf could also
result in coastal erosion. There is a potential of 2 to 4 inches of
rainfall through Monday.
