.AREAS AFFECTED...
This local statement provides information and recommended actions for
people on Yap, Fais, Ulithi, Faraulep and Woleai in Yap State.

.WATCHES/WARNINGS...
A tropical storm warning and a typhoon watch remain in effect for
Fais and Ulithi. Damaging winds of 39 mph or more are expected to
arrive late tonight or early Sunday morning. Typhoon force winds of
74 mph or more remain possible.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Woleai and Faraulep.
Damaging winds of 39 mph or more are occurring.

A typhoon watch remains in effect for Yap. Damaging winds of 39 mph
or more are possible Sunday, possibly reaching typhoon force of 74
mph or more.

.STORM INFORMATION...
At 700 PM CHST...0900 UTC, Tropical Storm Malakas was located near
Latitude 8.2 degrees North and Longitude 143.2 degrees East, about
75 miles northwest of Woleai. Malakas is moving northwest at 13 mph.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to 50 mph.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
TS Malakas is undergoing gradual intensification is expected to
continue for the next couple of days, possibly becoming a typhoon
Monday. Malakas is expected to continue along a general northwest
heading, passing near Fais Sunday morning.

.NEXT UPDATE...
The next local statement will be issued by the National Weather
Service at 300 AM Sunday morning, or earlier if needed.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Residents should remain in a sturdy shelter as damaging tropical
storm winds persist through the next several hours. Remain in
shelter until given the all clear. Small craft should remain in safe
harbor. Postpone any inter- island travel.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Latest satellite imagery shows that the center of TS Malakas is now
northwest of Woleai. Damaging winds of around 45 mph have likely
shifted to the southwest and will soon shift to south. Southwest to
south winds will decrease, eventually falling below damaging levels
of 39 mph this after midnight.

...SEAS...
Seas of 9 to 12 feet will continue to subside tonight and Sunday as
Malakas moves away from the island and winds decrease.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could continue to produce coastal inundation of 1 to 3
feet along windward shorelines through tonight, especially during
during high tides. Dangerous pounding surf will result in coastal
erosion. There is a potential of an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain
through Sunday.

...FARAULEP...

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Residents should remain in a sturdy shelter as damaging tropical
storm winds persist through tonight. Remain in shelter until the all
clear is given. For mariners, small craft should remain in safe
harbor. Postpone any inter-island travel.

...WIND INFORMATION...
TS Malakas is passing to the west of Faraulep. Southeast damaging
winds of 35 to 45 mph will subside, likely falling below damaging
levels of 39 mph after midnight.

...SEAS...
Seas of 8 to 10 feet will continue to subside through Sunday as
Malakas moves away from the island and winds decrease.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could continue to result in coastal inundation of 1 to 2
feet along windward reefs and shorelines through tonight, especially
during high tides. Hazardous surf will result in coastal erosion.
There is a potential of another 1 to 3 inches of rain through Sunday.

...ULITHI AND FAIS...

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
TS Malakas is still expected to pass near Fais Sunday morning.
Damaging winds are expected to arrive at both locations early Sunday
morning. Preparations for damaging winds, dangerous surf, coastal
inundation, and heavy rain should now be complete. Make sure you have
adequate supplies of food and water. Seek shelter in a sturdy
structure and remain there until given the all clear. For mariners,
small craft should remain in safe harbor. Postpone any inter-island
travel.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Northeast winds will increase overnight, then shift to north,
reaching damaging levels of 35 to 45 mph early Sunday morning.
Winds will increase further through midday Sunday to between 40 and
50 mph, gradually turning to the northwest. Winds will continue to
shift, becoming west then southwest and fall below damaging levels of
39 mph Sunday evening.

...SEAS...
Seas of 8 to 10 feet will increase to between 11 and 14 feet Sunday
morning. Seas will then slowly subside Sunday night and Monday as
Malakas moves away from the region and winds decrease.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could result in coastal inundation of 2 to 4 feet along
windward reefs and shorelines. Dangerous pounding surf could also
result in coastal erosion. There is a potential of 6 to 10 inches of
rainfall through Monday.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Damaging winds remain possible on Yap Sunday and Sunday night.
Residents should prepare for the possibility of damaging tropical
storm-force winds, dangerous surf, coastal inundation, and heavy
rain.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Damaging tropical storm force northwest to west winds are possible
Sunday and Sunday night as Malakas passes by to the northeast.

...SEAS...
Seas of 10 to 13 feet are possible as Malakas passes by Sunday. Seas
should subside slowly Monday as Malakas moves away from the region
and winds decrease.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could result in coastal inundation of 1 to 3 feet along
windward reefs and shorelines. Dangerous pounding surf could also
result in coastal erosion. There is a potential of 6 to 10 inches of
rainfall through Monday.
