near Latitude 5.9 degrees North and Longitude 145.8 degrees East,
about 135 miles southwest of Satawal. Malakas is moving north-
northwest at 8 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 50 mph.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
TS Malakas is expected to intensify the next few days as it moves
through the islands of eastern Yap State. Malakas, currently moving
north-northwest, is expected to turn more toward the northwest
tonight, passing between Yap proper and Guam on Sunday. Although not
expected to approach the Marianas at this time, residents of the
islands, especially Guam, should remain alert and monitor the latest
forecasts, watches, warnings and advisories.

.NEXT UPDATE...
The next local statement will be issued by the National Weather
Service at 300 AM early Saturday morning, or earlier if needed.

...SATAWAL...

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
The latest forecast brings damaging winds to Satawal tonight and
Saturday. Preparations to protect life and property should already
be completed, including securing loose outdoor objects which can be
blown around and removing or securing canopies. Make sure you have
adequate supplies of food and water. Seek shelter in a sturdy
structure and remain there until given the all clear. For mariners,
small craft should remain in safe harbor. Inter-island travel should
be postponed.

...WIND INFORMATION...
TS Malakas is expected to turn northwest later tonight or Saturday,
with the center passing west of the island. East winds will become
southeast, reaching damaging levels of 35 to 45 mph this evening and
early Saturday. Winds will decrease Saturday afternoon, while
shifting to south.

...SEAS...
As Malakas strengthens and passes Satawal, seas will build across
the area. Seas will build to between 8 and 10 feet tonight and
Saturday morning. Seas should then subside later Saturday as winds
decrease and Malakas moves farther away from the island.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could result in coastal inundation of up to 1 foot along
east to south facing reefs and shorelines. Inundation will be more
pronounced during high tide. Dangerous pounding surf could also
result in coastal erosion. There is a potential of 4 to 6 inches of
rainfall through Saturday night.

...WOLEAI...

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Damaging winds are expected on Woleai by early Saturday morning.
Preparations to protect life and property should be complete. Make
sure you have adequate supplies of food and water. Loose outdoor
objects which could be blown around and canopies should already be
stored or well secured. Seek shelter in a sturdy structure and remain
there until given the all clear. For mariners, small craft should
remain in safe harbor. Postpone any inter-island travel.

...WIND INFORMATION...
As TS Malakas approaches Woleai, northeast winds will increase and
become damaging at 35 to 45 mph tonight after midnight. Sustained
winds are expected to peak at 50 to 60 mph Saturday as they turn to
north and then northwest after noon. The latest track passes Malakas
just to the east of Woleai. A slight shift west would bring a change
in the wind directions. After Malakas passes later on Saturday,
winds will shift to the west and fall below damaging levels late
Saturday night around midnight.

...SEAS...
As TS Malakas strengthens and approaches Woleai, seas will build
across the area. Seas of 8 to 10 feet are possible tonight, building
to between 11 and 14 feet Saturday morning. Seas should then begin to
subside late Saturday night or Sunday morning as winds subside and
Malakas moves away from the island.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could result in coastal inundation of 2 to 4 feet along
windward shorelines. Inundation will be more pronounced during high
tide. Dangerous pounding surf could result in coastal erosion. There
is a potential of 8 to 12 inches of rainfall through Sunday.

...FARAULEP...

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Damaging winds are expected to arrive on Faraulep Saturday morning.
Preparations to protect life and property should be complete. Make
sure you have adequate supplies of food and water. Loose outdoor
objects which could be blown around and canopies should already be
stored or well secured. Seek shelter in a sturdy structure and
remain there until given the all clear. For mariners, small craft
should remain in safe harbor. Postpone any inter-island travel.

...WIND INFORMATION...
As TS Malakas approaches Faraulep, east winds will increase, reaching
damaging levels of 35 to 45 mph Saturday, then will shift to
southeast Saturday evening. Winds will then shift to south and begin
to subside late Saturday night and Sunday morning. Winds are expected
to fall below damaging levels Sunday morning.

...SEAS...
As Malakas strengthens and approaches Faraulep, seas will build
across the area. Seas of 8 to 10 feet are possible tonight, building
to between 9 and 12 feet Saturday. Seas should then subside Sunday
morning as winds decrease and Malakas moves away from the island.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could result in coastal inundation of 1 to 3 feet along
windward reefs and shorelines. Inundation will be more pronounced
during high tide. Dangerous pounding surf could also result in
coastal erosion. There is a potential of 6 to 10 inches of rainfall
through Sunday.

...YAP...ULITHI AND FAIS...

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
The latest forecast track remains relatively unchanged. Damaging
winds remain possible on Yap, Ulithi and Fais as an intensifying TS
Malakas moves by to the east Sunday, as a typhoon. Residents should
prepare for the possibility of destructive typhoon-force winds,
dangerous surf, coastal inundation, and heavy rain. As currently
forecast, Ulithi and Fais are expected to see the worst conditions,
but a westward shift in the track would bring worsening conditions to
Yap.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Damaging tropical storm force winds are possible by Sunday morning,
and typhoon force winds of 74 mph, or more, are possible Sunday
afternoon, although the threat is higher for Ulithi and Fais with
Malakas expected to pass to the east.

...SEAS...
Seas of 11 to 14 feet are possible as Malakas continues to
strengthen into a typhoon and passes by the islands on Sunday. Seas
should subside slowly Monday as winds decrease and Malakas moves
away from the region.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Storm surge could result in coastal inundation of 2 to 4 feet along
windward reefs and shorelines. Dangerous pounding surf could also
result in coastal erosion. There is a potential of 6 to 10 inches of
rainfall Sunday and Monday.
