...TROPICAL DEPRESSION 04W FORMS SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF KOROR...

.NEW INFORMATION...
A tropical storm watch is now in effect for Koror in the Republic of
Palau.

.AREAS AFFECTED...
This local statement provides information and recommended actions
for Koror in the Republic of Palau.

.WATCHES/WARNINGS...
A tropical storm watch is now in effect for Koror in the Republic of
Palau. Damaging winds of at least 39 mph are possible today.

.STORM INFORMATION...
At 700 AM ChST...2100 UTC...the center of Tropical Depression 04W was
located near Latitude 6.5 degrees North and Longitude 134.2 degrees
East. This was about 60 miles south-southwest of Koror. Tropical
Depression 04W is moving west at 8 mph but is expected to make a
turn toward the northwest with little change in forward speed today
and continue northwest Monday. 04W is also expected to continue
intensifying the next couple of days, likely becoming a tropical
storm later today.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
Although 04W is slowly moving away from Koror, the wind field is
expected to expand as it gradually intensifies. Should the winds
intensify and expand fast enough, tropical storm winds could briefly
develop over portions of the Koror area today.

.NEXT UPDATE...
The next local statement will be issued by 300 PM this afternoon or
sooner if needed.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Residents should prepare for the possibility of tropical storm force
winds exceeding 39 mph, including securing boats and loose objects.
Continue to monitor for additional information from your local
Weather Service Office and emergency management agency.

...WIND INFORMATION...
East winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph will shift to
southeast this afternoon. Winds could briefly increase to damaging
levels of 30 to 40 mph this afternoon before subsiding slightly
tonight. On Monday, the monsoon trough will lift north, prolonging
breezy southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph.

...STORM SURGE AND SURF INFORMATION...
Stronger winds and larger swell will cause seas to quickly increase
to between 7 and 10 feet by this evening. Surf will rise to hazardous
levels of 8 to 12 feet by this evening along east, south, and west
facing shores.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Heaviest showers near the center of 04W will stay well offshore of
Koror, however, as the southwesterly monsoon shifts over the area,
showers and thunderstorms will increase, possibly dropping between 3
and 5 inches of rain through Monday.
