...SURIGAE NOW A TYPHOON JUST NORTH OF KAYANGEL...

.NEW INFORMATION...
A Typhoon Warning is now in effect for Kayangel in the Republic of
Palau.

.AREAS AFFECTED...
This local statement provides information and recommended actions
for Kayangel and Koror in the Republic of Palau, and people on Ngulu
in Yap State.

.WATCHES/WARNINGS...
A Typhoon Warning is now in effect for Kayangel in the Republic of
Palau. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Koror in the
Republic of Palau. The Tropical Storm Warning has been cancelled for
Ngulu in Yap State.

.STORM INFORMATION...
At 700 AM ChST...2100 UTC...the center of Tropical Storm Surigae was
located near 8.7 degrees North and Longitude 134.8 degrees East,
which is about 185 miles west of Ngulu, about 40 miles north of
Kayangel, and about 100 miles north-northeast of Koror. Surigae was
moving west-southwest at 6 mph with maximum sustained winds of
75 mph.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
Tropical Storm Surigae will continue to move slowly westward today
while intensifying. At the same time, an expanding wind field will
prolong tropical storm conditions at Kayangel and Koror. Surigae is
expected to make a gradual turn toward the west-northwest with a
slight increase in forward speed later today.

.NEXT UPDATE...
The next local statement will be issued by 300 PM this afternoon or
sooner if needed.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Remain in a sturdy shelter until winds have subsided tonight.
Follow instructions from your emergency officials. The slow-moving
nature of an intensifying Surigae will lead to typhoon conditions
this morning and tropical storm conditions through today.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Typhoon force west-southwest winds of of 55 to 65 mph with gusts to
80 mph this morning decreasing to Tropical storm force west-southwest
winds 45 to 55 mph with gusts to 65 mph this afternoon. Winds will
shift to the southwest and gradually subsiding in the late afternoon.
Damaging winds will continue late this evening before subsiding to
between 25 and 35 mph early Saturday morning. Hazardous marine
conditions will continue for the next few days as winds will be slow
to decrease further.

...STORM SURGE AND SURF INFORMATION...
Dangerous surf of 14 to 19 feet along west and north facing reefs
will continue through this morning, eventually spreading to south
facing reefs. Surf will slowly subside beginning tonight. Coastal
inundation of 2 to 3 feet is expected along northern and western
shores through this evening, then will spread to southern shores
tonight.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Additional rainfall of 4 to 8 inches is likely through tonight.
Flash flooding remains possible.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Remain in a sturdy shelter until winds have subsided by tonight.
Follow instructions from your emergency officials. The slow-moving
nature of an intensifying Surigae will prolong tropical storm
conditions through most of today.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Tropical storm force west winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts to 55 mph
will increase to around 50 mph with gusts to 65 mph near noon. Winds
will shift to the southwest this afternoon while decreasing slowly.
Winds are expected to fall below damaging levels early this evening.
All vessels, especially small craft, should remain in port.

...STORM SURGE AND SURF INFORMATION...
Dangerous surf of 13 to 18 feet along west and northwest facing reefs
will continue through this morning. Surf will slowly subside by this
evening, but will spread to south and southwest facing reefs. Coastal
inundation of 1 to 3 feet is expected along northern and western
shores through this afternoon, then will spread to southern shores
tonight.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Additional rainfall of 5 to 10 inches is possible through this
afternoon. Flash flooding and mudslides are possible.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Follow instructions from your emergency officials.

...WIND INFORMATION...
Expect winds of between 20 and 30 mph through this afternoon.
Hazardous marine conditions for small craft will continue for the
next few days as winds and seas will be slow to decrease further.

...STORM SURGE AND SURF INFORMATION...
Surf will be at hazardous levels of 11 to 13 feet through tonight.
Coastal inundation of 1 to 2 feet is expected along southern and
western shores through this morning.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible this morning and
afternoon as outer rain bands periodically pass over the area.
