TROPICAL DEPRESSION 20W HAS BEEN UPGRADED TO TROPICAL STORM HAGIBIS.

.AREAS AFFECTED...
This local statement provides important information and recommended
actions for people in the CNMI of the Mariana Islands.

.Watches/Warnings...
A Typhoon Watch remains in effect for Alamagan in the northern CNMI.
Tropical storm conditions, including damaging winds of 39 mph or
more, are possible within 36 to 48 hours by Monday afternoon.
Typhoon conditions, including destructive winds of 74 mph or more,
are possible within 48 hours during Monday night.

A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Rota, Tinian and Saipan
in the CNMI, and for Pagan and Agrihan in the northern CNMI. Tropical
storm conditions, including damaging winds of 39 mph or more, are
possible within 48 hours, by late Monday afternoon or early
Monday evening.

.STORM INFORMATION...
At 7 AM ChST...the center of Tropical Storm Hagibis was located near
LATITUDE 15.3N...LONGITUDE 156.9E. This was about 745 miles east
of Saipan. Hagibis was moving west at 17 mph with maximum sustained
winds at 40 mph.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
Hagibis is expected to continue intensifying the next couple of
days as it moves westward toward the Marianas. The latest forecast
has Hagibis passing through the northern Marianas Monday night and
early Tuesday morning as a typhoon.

.NEXT UPDATE...
The next local statement will be issued by the National Weather
Service around 3 PM...or sooner if conditions warrant.

...PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Review your disaster preparedness plans and start preparing for the
onset of damaging winds, which are possible by late Monday afternoon
or evening. Make sure you have adequate supplies of food, water, and
needed medical supplies. Fill your vehicles with fuel and ensure your
generator is in good working order, and have extra supplies of fuel
for its operation. Clear your property and drains of potential
debris. Have a portable radio ready for receiving storm information.

...Winds...
As Hagibis approaches the Marianas, gentle north winds will turn to
the northwest and become moderate to fresh on Monday. Tropical storm
force west to northwest winds are possible by early Monday evening
and might last through early Tuesday morning. Winds will turn to the
southwest and gradually subside through the day Tuesday.

...Storm surge and storm tide...
Seas will quickly build as winds increase on Monday. Combined seas
are expected to reach between 14 and 16 feet in Tinian and Saipan
waters and up to 10 to 12 feet in Rota waters by early Monday
evening. Surf will reach dangerous levels of 15 to 17 feet on Tinian
and Saipan, and hazardous levels of 11 to 13 feet on Rota Monday
night and Tuesday. Up to 1 to 2 feet of inundation is possible along
windward coasts.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Heavy rainfall will begin Monday with 5 and 8 inches of rain possible
at Tinian and Saipan and 2 to 4 inches at Rota through Tuesday.

As Hagibis approaches the Marianas, moderate northeast winds will
increase throughout the day Monday. Tropical storm force northeast
winds are possible late Monday afternoon with typhoon force east
to southeast winds possible Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
Winds will turn to south and gradually subside Tuesday.

...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...
Seas will quickly build as winds increase on Monday. Combined seas
are expected to reach between 15 and 20 feet by Monday evening.
Dangerous surf of 15 to 20 feet is expected Monday night and Tuesday.
Up to 3 to 5 feet of inundation is possible along windward coasts.

...OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Heavy rainfall will begin Monday with 6 and 10 inches of rain
possible through Tuesday.
