Tropical Weather Discussion for North America, Central America
Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, northern sections of South
America, and Atlantic Ocean to the African coast from the
Equator to 32N. The following information is based on satellite
imagery, weather observations, radar and meteorological analysis.

Based on 0000 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through
0515 UTC.

...MONSOON TROUGH/ITCZ...

The monsoon trough extends from 09N13W to 04N18W. The ITCZ
continues from 04N18W to 01N22W to 00N50W. Scattered moderate to
isolated strong convection is along the coast of W Africa from
04N to 08N between 10W and 15W. Scattered moderate convection is
along the coast of South America from 00N to 03S between 36W and
45W. Scattered moderate convection is from 04N to 30S between 47W
and 57W.

...DISCUSSION...

GULF OF MEXICO...

A cold front has exited the Straits of Florida. A 1019 mb high is
centered over the NW Gulf of Mexico near 28N93W. 5-10 kt
anticyclonic winds are over the NW Gulf. Isolated moderate
convection is over the central Gulf from 24N to 30N between 85W
and 91W, in response to a mid level disturbance moving over the
region. This disturbance over the NW Gulf will move east, bringing
with is showers to the NE Gulf today. Most of the region should
see relatively light winds and low seas for the remainder of today.
15-20 kt SE return flow will dominate the Gulf Mon through Fri.

CARIBBEAN SEA...

The tail end of a cold front extends from central Cuba near 22N79W
to W Cuba near 22N84W. Scattered showers are within 30 nm of the
front. A surface trough extends from central Cuba near 21N79W to N
Honduras near 16N86W. Scattered showers are within 60 nm of the
trough. Furthermore, scattered moderate convection is occurring
inland over S Guatemala, Honduras, and N Nicaragua.

Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is occurring
over the far southwestern Caribbean Sea near the coasts of
Colombia, Panama, and Costa Rica. This activity is primarily
associated with a surface trough that extends from the eastern
Pacific to low pressure over NE Colombia.

Otherwise, typical patches of low clouds and isolated showers are
moving westward across the Leeward Islands in the trade wind
flow. Fresh trades are occurring over the S central Caribbean,
while mainly moderate trades are occurring elsewhere. These winds
will prevail through the remainder of the weekend.

ATLANTIC OCEAN...

A cold front extends from 32N69W to a 1012 mb low near 28N74W to
central Cuba near 22N79W. Scattered moderate convection is over a
large area E of the front N of 24N between 65W and 71W. A very
large 1038 mb high is over the central Atlantic near 38N42W
producing fair weather over the central and eastern Atlantic.
Elsewhere in the tropics, a surface trough extends from 10N53W to
South America near 06N55W. Scattered showers are within 90 nm of
the trough.

An upper trough over the eastern Atlantic is supporting scattered
moderate convection from 15N to 21N between 18W and 25W, to
include portions of the Cape Verde Islands.

Today, the cold front over the W Atlantic will move east and
weaken, with thunderstorms continuing within 300 nm east of the
front. A remnant surface trough will move E with showers from Mon
through Wed. High pressure will continue to dominate over the
remainder of the central and eastern Atlantic.
