**MARIA BEGINNING TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE COAST OF NORTH CAROLINA**

NEW INFORMATION
---------------

* CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS:
    - None

* CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS:
    - A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Eastern Currituck and
      Western Currituck

* STORM INFORMATION:
    - About 220 miles southeast of Ocean City MD or about 220 miles
      east-southeast of Norfolk VA
    - 35.9N 72.4W
    - Storm Intensity 75 mph
    - Movement North-northeast or 30 degrees at 6 mph

SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------

* HURRICANE MARIA WILL SLOWLY TRACK NORTHEAST OFF THE NORTH CAROLINA
  OUTER BANKS THIS EVENING, THEN BEGIN TO ACCELERATE TO THE NORTHEAST LATE
  TONIGHT AND THURSDAY. WINDS NEAR TROPICAL STORM FORCE CONTINUE ACROSS
  COASTAL NORTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA TONIGHT. THESE CONDITIONS WILL CAUSE HIGH
  SURF...WHILE ALSO ALLOWING FOR SOME BEACH EROSION AS WELL AS DANGEROUS RIP
  CURRENTS ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COAST. SOME LOCALIZED COASTAL FLOODING WILL BE
  POSSIBLE AROUND THE TIME OF HIGH TIDE ACROSS THE CURRITUCK OUTER BANKS.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------

* WIND:
Protect against hazardous wind having possible limited impacts across
northeast North Carolina. Potential impacts in this area include:
    - Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored
      mobile homes. Unsecured lightweight objects blown about.
    - Many large tree limbs broken off. A few trees snapped or
      uprooted, especially if soils are saturated. Some roadway signs
      will sustain damage.
    - A few roads will be impassable from debris. Hazardous driving
      conditions on bridges and other elevated roadways.
    - Scattered power and communications outages.

* SURGE:
Minor impacts are expected across coastal portions of the Currituck
Outer Banks within a few hours either side of high tide tonight.

* OTHER COASTAL HAZARDS:
High surf will bring a high threat of life threatening rip currents,
dangerous shore break and beach erosion across northeast North Carolina
beaches. It is recommended that you stay out of the surf zone.

* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:
* Now is the time to bring to completion all preparations to protect
life and property.

Complete outside preparations before wind and rain arrive. Any
remaining evacuations and relocations should be completed before the
onset of strong gusty wind.

Heed the advice of local officials and comply with any evacuation
orders that are issued. Remember, during the storm, 9 1 1 Emergency
Services may be unavailable if conditions are unsafe. Plan
accordingly.

Check-in with your emergency points of contact among family, friends,
and co-workers. Inform them of your status and well-being. Let them
know how you intend to ride out the storm and when you plan to
check-in again.

Keep cell phones well charged and handy. Also, cell phone chargers
for automobiles can be helpful after the storm. Locate your chargers
and keep them with your cell phone.

If you are a visitor, pay attention to instructions from local
authorities.

Closely monitor NOAA Weather radio or other local news outlets for
official storm information. Be ready to adapt to changes in the
forecast.
