**Jose Will Bring A Variety of Hazards to Southern New England**

* CHANGES TO WATCHES AND WARNINGS:
    - None

* CURRENT WATCHES AND WARNINGS:
    - A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Barnstable MA, Block
      Island RI, Dukes MA, Eastern Plymouth MA, Nantucket MA, Newport
      RI, Southern Bristol MA, Southern Plymouth MA, and Washington RI

* STORM INFORMATION:
    - About 570 miles south of Nantucket MA
    - 33.0N 71.4W
    - Storm Intensity 85 mph
    - Movement North or 360 degrees at 9 mph

SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------

Jose is forecast to pass southeast of Nantucket, bringing a variety of
significant hazards Tuesday through Thursday, especially to the South
Coast of Rhode Island and Massachusetts which includes Cape Cod,
Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Block Island.

Tropical Storm Force winds may impact southern Rhode Island and
southeast Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands. These
winds may be strong enough to result in some tree damage and scattered
power outages.

Of greater concern is the potential for severe beach erosion along
ocean coastlines of Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts. Some
protective dunes may be overtopped or severely eroded by this storm.

On the coastal waters south and southeast of New England, seas should
build to over 20 feet. The combination of high seas and strong winds
will result in life-threatening conditions. Mariners are advised to be
in port by tonight.

Other potential hazards include localized flash flooding in urban
areas from as much as 3 to 5 inches of rain, and minor to moderate
coastal flooding during times of high tide Tuesday and Wednesday.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------

* WIND:
Prepare for dangerous wind having possible significant impacts across
southern Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts, especially on Cape
Cod and the Islands.

Potential impacts in this area include:
    - Some damage to roofing and siding materials, along with damage
      to porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. A few buildings
      experiencing window, door, and garage door failures. Mobile
      homes damaged, especially if unanchored. Unsecured lightweight
      objects become dangerous projectiles.
    - Several large trees snapped or uprooted, but with greater
      numbers in places where trees are shallow rooted. Several
      fences and roadway signs blown over.
    - Some roads impassable from large debris, and more within urban
      or heavily wooded places. A few bridges, causeways, and access
      routes impassable.
    - Scattered power and communications outages, but more prevalent
      in areas with above ground lines.

Also, prepare for hazardous wind having possible limited impacts
across the remainder of southern New England.

* SURGE:
Prepare for life-threatening surge having possible significant impacts
across parts of east coastal Massachusetts. Potential impacts in this
area include:
    - Areas of inundation with storm surge flooding accentuated by
      waves. Damage to several buildings, mainly near the coast.
    - Sections of near-shore escape routes and secondary roads become
      weakened or washed out, especially in usually vulnerable low
      spots.
    - Major beach erosion with heavy surf breaching dunes. Strong and
      numerous rip currents.
    - Moderate damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers.
      Several small craft broken away from moorings, especially in
      unprotected anchorages.

Also, prepare for locally hazardous surge having possible limited
impacts across south coastal Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Elsewhere across southern New England, little to no impact is
anticipated.

* FLOODING RAIN:
Prepare for locally hazardous rainfall flooding having possible limited
impacts across southern New England. Potential impacts include:
    - Localized rainfall flooding may prompt a few evacuations.
    - Rivers and tributaries may quickly rise with swifter currents.
      Small streams, creeks, canals, arroyos, and ditches may become
      swollen and overflow in spots.
    - Flood waters can enter a few structures, especially in usually
      vulnerable spots. A few places where rapid ponding of water
      occurs at underpasses, low-lying spots, and poor drainage
      areas. Several storm drains and retention ponds become
      near-full and begin to overflow. Some brief road and bridge
      closures.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:
Now is the time to check your emergency plan and take necessary
actions to secure your home or business. Deliberate efforts should be
underway to protect life and property. Ensure that your Emergency
Supplies Kit is stocked and ready.

When making safety and preparedness decisions, do not focus on the
exact forecast track as there are inherent forecast uncertainties
which must be taken into account.

If you live in a place that is particularly vulnerable to high wind,
such as a mobile home or on a boat, plan to move to safe shelter. Take
enough supplies for you and your family for several days.

Always heed the advice of local officials and comply with any orders
that are issued. Do not needlessly jeopardize your life or the lives
of others.

Closely monitor NOAA Weather Radio or other local news outlets for
official storm information. Listen for possible changes to the
forecast.
