SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------
Winds will continue to slowly diminish as Irma moves into southern
Georgia. Frequent gusts between 45 and 55 mph continue across Lake and
Volusia counties, thus a tropical storm warning continues for this
area. Elsewhere, breezy to windy conditions will linger through sunset.
Despite the temptation to begin recovery efforts, DO NOT DO SO until
strong winds subside in your area! Many deaths and injuries occur
during the initial phase of recovery! Do not venture out onto the
roadways until the all clear is given, and it is safe to do so. Traffic
signals are very likely to be out of service on most in not all major
roads. In addition, be on the lookout for downed power lines, unstable
trees and buildings, as well as areas of standing water on roads and
in low lying poor drainage areas.
High surf will combine with significant beach erosion and produce a
potential for minor coastal flooding around the time of high tide early
this afternoon and again tonight. Avoid the beaches until conditions
improve! Operators of small craft should remain in port until winds and
seas subside.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------
* WIND:
Remain sheltered from wind having possible additional impacts,
especially across Lake and Volusia counties where gusts between 45 and
55 mph will continue through early this afternoon. Potential additional
impacts include:
- Several large trees snapped or uprooted, but with greater
numbers in places where trees are shallow rooted. Several
fences and roadway signs blown over.
- Some roads impassable from large debris, and more within urban
or heavily wooded places. A few bridges, causeways, and access
routes impassable.
- Scattered power and communications outages, but more prevalent
in areas with above ground lines.
* OTHER COASTAL HAZARDS:
Large breaking waves and high seas will make for potentially life-
threatening boating conditions, extremely rough surf, and numerous
strong rip currents. Residents and visitors will need to avoid the
beaches until conditions improve. Operators of small craft should
remain in port until winds and seas subside.
In addition, beaches have likely suffered erosion and will remain in a
weakened state. Additional erosion is likely, especially around the
time of high tide early this afternoon and again overnight.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
----------------------------------
* EVACUATIONS:
Do not return to evacuated areas until it is safe. Listen for the all-
clear signal from local authorities.
