URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
HURRICANE LESTER LOCAL STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
453 AM HST FRI SEP 2 2016

...LESTER MOVING WEST-NORTHWEST AND GRADUALLY WEAKENING...

.NEW INFORMATION...
THIS IS AN ABBREVIATED STATEMENT TO CANCEL THE HURRICANE WATCH
FOR THE BIG ISLAND.

.AREAS AFFECTED...
THIS LOCAL STATEMENT PROVIDES INFORMATION FOR PORTIONS OF
LOCATIONS WITHIN THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.

.WATCHES/WARNINGS...
A HURRICANE WATCH CONTINUES FOR OAHU...MOLOKAI...LANAI...
KAHOOLAWE...MAUI.

A HIGH SURF ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL EAST FACING SHORES OF
KAUAI OAHU MOLOKAI MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND.

.STORM INFORMATION...
AT 4 AM HST...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE LESTER WAS LOCATED NEAR
LATITUDE 19.7N...LONGITUDE 148.4W...OR ABOUT 435 MILES EAST OF
HILO...OR ABOUT 625 MILES EAST OF HONOLULU. HURRICANE LESTER IS
MOVING WEST-NORTHWEST AT 14 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR
110 MPH.

.SITUATION OVERVIEW...
ON THE FORECAST TRACK...HURRICANE LESTER IS FORECAST TO APPROACH
THE STATE FROM THE EAST TODAY...AND THEN PASS TO THE NORTHEAST
OF ALL THE MAIN ISLANDS THIS WEEKEND. LESTER WILL PASS BY THE
BIG ISLAND EARLY SATURDAY MORNING...MAUI COUNTY ON SATURDAY...
OAHU SATURDAY EVENING...AND KAUAI SATURDAY NIGHT. THE HURRICANE
IS EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY WEAKEN DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT IMPACT FROM LESTER IS EXPECTED TO BE VERY
LARGE AND DAMAGING SURF ALONG EAST FACING SHORES. ALTHOUGH THE FORECAST
TRACK CURRENTLY KEEPS THE STRONGEST WINDS AND HEAVIEST RAINS
OFFSHORE...THE LOCAL WEATHER WILL BE HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE EXACT
TRACK THAT LESTER TAKES AS IT PASSES BY. ONLY A SMALL ERROR ON THE
LEFT SIDE OF THE FORECAST TRACK WOULD BRING A SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER
THREAT OF DAMAGING WINDS AND FLOODING RAINS TO THE ISLANDS.

.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

IT IS VITAL THAT YOU DO NOT FOCUS ON THE EXACT FORECAST TRACK.
FORECAST MOVEMENT...DIRECTION...AND SPEED ARE ONLY ESTIMATES.
EVEN SMALL ERRORS IN THE FORECAST TRACK CAN MEAN MAJOR
DIFFERENCES IN WHERE THE WORST CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR. DAMAGING
EFFECTS CAN EXTEND FAR FROM THE CENTER.

FOR THOSE UNDER A WATCH...NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE. SECURE OR
BRING INDOORS ANY LOOSE OUTDOOR OBJECTS LIKE LAWN FURNITURE...
CHILDRENS TOYS...HANGING PLANTS...BARBECUE GRILLS...OR ANY ITEM
THAT COULD BECOME A DESTRUCTIVE PROJECTILE IN STRONG WINDS. DO
NOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE.

STAY CALM AND KEEP INFORMED. CLOSELY MONITOR NOAA WEATHER RADIO
OR OTHER LOCAL NEWS OUTLETS FOR OFFICIAL STORM INFORMATION.
LISTEN
FOR WARNINGS OR CHANGES TO THE FORECAST.

BE READY TO EVACUATE IF NECESSARY. HEED THE ADVICE OF LOCAL
OFFICIALS AND COMPLY WITH ANY ORDERS THAT ARE ISSUED. PERSONS
LIVING NEAR THE SHORE SHOULD BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE QUICKLY
SHOULD BUILDING SURF THREATEN.

&&

.NEXT UPDATE...
A FULL LOCAL STATEMENT WILL BE ISSUED SHORTLY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

TAKE PRECAUTIONS IN CASE LESTER MOVES CLOSER THAN EXPECTED. COVER
ALL WINDOWS AND DOORS WITH SHUTTERS OR PLYWOOD. LOOSE OBJECTS
SUCH AS LUMBER...LAWN FURNITURE...GARBAGE CANS...AND OTHER ITEMS
SHOULD BE SECURED OR STORED INDOORS. BRACE ALL EXTERIOR DOORS...
INCLUDING GARAGE DOORS.

PREPARE FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENDED POWER OUTAGES. IF YOU
NEED TO MAKE A TRIP TO THE HARDWARE STORE...THE GROCERY STORE...
OR THE GAS STATION...DO SO AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

&&

...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...
VERY LARGE AND DAMAGING SURF...PEAKING 20 TO 35 FEET...IS
EXPECTED ALONG EAST FACING SHORES FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY AND
DIMINISHING ON SUNDAY. THIS MAY CAUSE SIGNIFICANT WAVE RUNUP OR
DAMAGE TO COASTAL PROPERTIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE...INCLUDING
ROADWAYS. POWERFUL LONGSHORE AND RIP CURRENTS WILL BE PRESENT AT
MOST BEACHES. LARGE BREAKING WAVES AND STRONG CURRENTS MAY IMPACT
HARBOR ENTRANCES AND CHANNELS CAUSING CHALLENGING BOAT HANDLING.

...INLAND FLOODING...
DEEP TROPICAL MOISTURE AROUND HURRICANE LESTER WILL RESULT IN
INCREASING SHOWERS TONIGHT FOR MAUI COUNTY...WITH THE POSSIBILITY
OF LOCALIZED HEAVIER DOWNPOURS OR THUNDERSHOWERS DEVELOPING THIS
WEEKEND. HOWEVER...THE THREAT OF HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING WOULD BE
EVEN GREATER IF LESTER MOVES FARTHER TO THE WEST THAN CURRENTLY
FORECASTED.

...WINDS...
ALTHOUGH THE LATEST FORECAST IS FOR SUSTAINED WINDS TO REMAIN
BELOW TROPICAL STORM FORCE OF 39 MPH...ONLY A SMALL CHANGE IN THE
TRACK OF LESTER COULD RESULT IN HIGHER WINDS DURING THE TIME
LESTER WILL MAKE ITS CLOSEST APPROACH.
