HURRICANE IKE LOCAL STATEMENT

...A HURRICANE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE TEXAS GULF COAST...

.AT 10 PM CDT...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE IKE WAS LOCATED NEAR
LATITUDE 24.9 NORTH...LONGITUDE 86.7 WEST OR ABOUT 675 MILES EAST
OF BROWNSVILLE TEXAS AND ABOUT 325 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF THE
MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER.

IKE IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST NEAR 7 MPH. A TURN BACK TOWARD
THE WEST-NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED TONIGHT OR EARLY ON THURSDAY...AND
A GENERAL WEST-NORTHWEST MOTION OVER THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN GULF
OF MEXICO IS EXPECTED ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 100 MPH...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. IKE
IS A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. GRADUAL
STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS...AND IKE
COULD BECOME A MAJOR HURRICANE ON THURSDAY OR FRIDAY.

IKE IS A LARGE HURRICANE. HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP
TO 115 MILES FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS
EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 230 MILES.

THE LATEST MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE REPORTED BY AN AIR FORCE
RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT WAS 944 MILLIBARS...OR 27.88 INCHES.

A HURRICANE WATCH IS ISSUED FOR AN AREA WHEN HURRICANE CONDITIONS
ARE A POSSIBLE THREAT WITHIN 36 HOURS. HURRICANES PRODUCE WINDS
OF 74 MPH AND HIGHER. CITIZENS OF KENEDY COUNTY SHOULD REMAIN
VIGILANT AND SHOULD CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST POSITION AND
FORECAST PATH OF HURRICANE IKE. NOW IS THE TIME TO ENSURE THAT
YOU HAVE YOUR HURRICANE SUPPLIES IN STOCK.

...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...

AT THIS TIME...THE EXPECTED STORM SURGE FOR KENEDY COUNTY WILL
RANGE FROM 4 TO 5 FEET STARTING FRIDAY AND CONTINUING THROUGH THE
LANDFALL OF IKE EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.

SUSTAINED TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO MOVE INTO
KENEDY COUNTY STARTING FRIDAY EVENING WITH THESE CONDITIONS
PERSISTING INTO SATURDAY MORNING...AND EVENTUALLY DIMINISHING ON
SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. WIND GUSTS UP TO HURRICANE FORCE
ARE ALSO POSSIBLE FROM FRIDAY EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING.

...PROBABILITY OF HURRICANE/TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS...

THE PROBABILITY OF TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS FOR KENEDY COUNTY
WILL RANGE FROM 20 TO 30 PERCENT DURING FRIDAY MORNING INCREASING
TO 30 TO 40 PERCENT FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH MIDDAY SATURDAY.
THE PROBABILITY OF HURRICANE FORCE WINDS FOR KENEDY COUNTY DURING
THE SAME TIME PERIOD WILL RANGE FROM 5 TO 10 PERCENT.

...INLAND FLOODING...

HEAVY AND PERSISTENT RAIN BANDS FROM HURRICANE IKE WILL BEGIN
AFFECTING KENEDY COUNTY ON THURSDAY NIGHT AND WILL LIKELY CONTINUE
THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING. THESE RAIN BANDS WILL PRODUCE TOTAL
STORM AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES WITH ISOLATED AMOUNTS OF 3 TO 5
INCHES POSSIBLE. THIS AMOUNT OF RAINFALL MAY QUICKLY RESULT IN
WIDESPREAD FLOODING PROBLEMS. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MAY BE NEEDED
FOR KENEDY COUNTY ON THURSDAY.

SATURDAY MORNING. THE PROBABILITY OF HURRICANE FORCE WINDS FOR
THIS SAME AREA AND TIME PERIOD WILL RANGE FROM 5 TO 10 PERCENT.
