...HURRICANE GUSTAV BEATING DOWN ON NORTH CENTRAL GULF COAST...

.AT 1000 PM CDT SUNDAY...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE GUSTAV WAS LOCATED
NEAR LATITUDE 27.3 NORTH...LONGITUDE 88.1 WEST...OR ABOUT 220
MILES SOUTHEAST OF NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA. THIS POSITION WAS ALSO
ABOUT 230 MILES SOUTHWEST OF DESTIN...AND WAS NEAR ITS CLOSET
APPROACH TO THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE COAST.

GUSTAV WAS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST NEAR 16 MPH...AND THIS
MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE PRIOR TO LANDFALL. ON THE FORECAST
TRACK...THE CENTER OF GUSTAV WOULD REACH THE NORTHERN GULF COAST
DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS MONDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 115 MPH. GUSTAV IS A CATEGORY
THREE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. A LITTLE
STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE PRIOR TO LANDFALL.

GUSTAV IS A LARGE TROPICAL CYCLONE. TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS
EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 220 MILES.

...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...

AT 1030 PM CDT THE TIDE WAS ABOUT 1 FOOT ABOVE NORMAL AT THE PANAMA
CITY AND APALACHICOLA GAGES. A STORM SURGE OF 2 TO 3 FEET IS
FORECAST ALONG THE PANHANDLE AND FRANKLIN COUNTY COASTS.
FORTUNATELY THE ASTRONOMICAL TIDES ARE LESS THAN 2 FEET ALONG THE
PANHANDLE COAST...SO THE HIGHEST STORM TIDES WILL RANGE FROM 4 TO
5 FEET AT THE TIMES OF HIGH TIDE. STORM TIDES WILL BE A LITTLE
HIGHER ALONG THE FRANKLIN COUNTY COAST WHERE THE ASTRONOMICAL
TIDES ARE HIGHER...AND A STORM TIDE OF 5 TO 6 FEET IS FORECAST AT
THE TIMES OF HIGH TIDE.

THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME HIGH AND LOW TIDES AT AREA BEACHES.

DESTIN...HIGH TIDE AT 111 AM CDT. LOW TIDE AT 650 AM CDT. HIGH
TIDE AT 144 PM CDT. LOW TIDE AT 631 PM CDT.

MINOR FLOODING OF LOW LYING ROADS AND POOR DRAINAGE AREAS IS
POSSIBLE AT THE TIME OF HIGH TIDE.

WINDS ACROSS THE REGION APPEARED TO BE PEAKING AS GUSTAV WAS
MAKING ITS CLOSEST APPROACH TO THE PANHANDLE. SO FAR THE ONLY
SUSTAINED TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS REPORTED WERE OVER THE
COASTAL WATERS OF THE PANHANDLE. AT 10 PM CDT SUNDAY THE GULF BUOY
SOUTH OF PANAMA CITY...SITE 42039...REPORTED A SUSTAINED WIND OF
39 KNOTS (45 MPH) WITH A GUST TO 52 KNOTS (60 MPH). SINCE THEN THE
WINDS HAVE LOWERED SLIGHTLY. INLAND WINDS HAVE BEEN SUSTAINED AT
15 TO 25 MPH...WITH GUSTS NEAR 35 MPH AT THE COAST.

...INLAND FLOODING...

RAINFALL TOTALS ON SUNDAY WERE LIGHT...AND RECENT RADAR AND
SATELLITE TRENDS INDICATE THE BULK OF THE HEAVY RAIN WILL REMAIN
SOUTH OF THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE COAST. THUS THE THREAT FOR FLOODING
IS LOW...WITH STORM TOTAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 INCHES OR
LESS...AND LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE NEAR THE COAST.

ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE THROUGH MONDAY MORNING. THE
PROBABILITY OF A TORNADO WITHIN 25 MILES OF A POINT IS 5 PERCENT

THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND INTO TUESDAY.
