THIS STATEMENT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THE
FOLLOWING PARISHES IN LOUISIANA...ASCENSION...ASSUMPTION...
EAST BATON ROUGE...IBERVILLE...JEFFERSON...LAFOURCHE...LIVINGSTON...
ORLEANS...PLAQUEMINES...ST BERNARD...ST CHARLES...ST JAMES...ST JOHN
THE BAPTIST...ST TAMMANY...TANGIPAHOA...TERREBONNE...WEST BATON
ROUGE.

A HURRICANE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AND
COASTAL MISSISSIPPI FROM MORGAN CITY EAST TO ST MARKS FLORIDA. THIS
INCLUDES THE GREATER NEW ORLEANS METROPOLITAN AREA AND PARISHES
BOARDING LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN AND LAKE MAUREPAS.

...STORM INFORMATION SUMMARY...
AT 10 AM CDT...HURRICANE IVAN WAS LOCATED AT 23.4 NORTH AND 86.2
WEST...OR ABOUT 435 MILES SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF THE NORTHERN GULF OF
MEXICO COAST. IVAN IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH NORTHWEST AT 8 MILES
AN HOUR. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE DECREASED AND ARE NOW 140
MILES AN HOUR WITH HIGHER GUSTS. HOWEVER...IVAN REMAINS AN EXTREMELY
DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE. FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE
COMMON IN MAJOR HURRICANES AND ARE EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

...PRECAUTIONARY AND PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
SEVERAL PARISHES HAVE ISSUED EVACUATION ORDERS IN SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA
INCLUDING ORLEANS...JEFFERSON AND ST BERNARD. RESIDENTS SHOULD
MONITOR LOCAL MEDIA FOR EVACUATION ORDERS FROM LOCAL EMERGENCY
AGENCIES.

A HURRICANE WATCH MEANS HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN 36
HOURS. RESIDENTS OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AND COASTAL MISSISSIPPI
SHOULD MAKE PREPARATIONS FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF HURRICANE CONDITIONS.
RESIDENTS SHOULD FOLLOW EVACUATION RECOMMENDATIONS GIVEN BY LOCAL AND
STATE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS. HURRICANE WARNINGS MAYBE REQUIRED FOR
PORTIONS OF THE AREA LATE THIS AFTERNOON OR TONIGHT.

IVAN IS A VERY LARGE...DANGEROUS HURRICANE. ALTHOUGH IVAN IS EXPECTED
TO WEAKEN BEFORE LANDFALL...PEOPLE SHOULD TAKE ALL NECESSARY MEASURES
TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY FROM A POTENTIAL STRIKE OF A MAJOR
HURRICANE.

...STORM SURGE FLOOD AND STORM TIDE IMPACTS...
TIDES ARE CURRENTLY NEAR 1 TO 2 FEET ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS SOUTHEAST
LOUISIANA. DUE TO THE LARGE WIND FIELD ASSOCIATED WITH HURRICANE
IVAN...TIDES WILL GRADUALLY INCREASE ACROSS THE AREA LATE TODAY AND
TONIGHT IN ADVANCE OF HURRICANE. EXTREME STORM SURGE VALUES OF 12 TO
18 FEET ABOVE NORMAL ARE POSSIBLE NEAR AND TO THE EAST OF THE
CENTER.

ORLEANS LEVEE DISTRICT AND LAKE BORGNE LEVEE DISTRICT HAVE CLOSED
THE FLOOD GATES AT BAYOU BIENVENUE AND BAYOU DUPREE.

...WIND IMPACTS....
EAST TO NORTHEAST WIND OF 20 TO 25 MPH WILL CONTINUE OVER COASTAL
AREAS TODAY. TROPICAL STORM WINDS...WINDS OF 40 MPH OR HIGHER...WILL
SPREAD INTO THE COASTAL AREAS MID DAY WEDNESDAY...THEN SPREAD INLAND.
DEPENDING ON THE EXACT TRACK OF HURRICANE IVAN...HURRICANE FORCE
WINDS MAY SPREAD INTO THE COASTAL AREAS OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AND
COASTAL MISSISSIPPI WEDNESDAY EVENING.

...HEAVY RAINFALL...
HEAVY RAINS ASSOCIATED HURRICANE IVAN ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP
WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE WEDNESDAY NIGHT. STORM TOTAL AMOUNTS
OVER 6 INCHES ARE LIKELY...AND DEPENDENT ON THE LANDFALL OF HURRICANE
IVAN. LOCALIZED FLOODING WILL BE POSSIBLE.
