...Climate Summary for December, 2022...

The month of December, 2022 will be remembered mostly for it's
extremes. While the monthly average temperatures and rainfall
totals ended up close to normal for most locations, the day-to-
day roller-coaster was anything but normal.

In Nashville, the average temperature was 43.1 degrees, which was
just four-tenths of a degree above normal. The average high
temperature was 52.1 degrees and the average low temperature was
34.2 degrees. The highest temperature was 73 degrees on the 6th
and the lowest temperature was minus 1 degree on the 23rd. (This
was the city's first sub-zero reading in nearly 27 years.) There
were 16 days with freezing temperatures. Of note, a cold front
swept through Middle Tennessee during the evening of the 22nd that
dropped the temperature 52 degrees in a little over 14 hours.

Total precipitation in December was 4.49 inches, which was 0.06
inches above normal. The greatest 24-hour rainfall was 1.25 inches
on the 14th. There were 12 days on which measurable precipitation
occurred, including two days with measurable snow. Total snowfall
was 1.2 inches.

There were also 2 days with thunderstorms. The peak wind gust was
46 mph on the 22nd.

In Clarksville, the average temperature was 41.1 degrees, which
was 1.2 degrees above normal. The average high temperature was
50.2 degrees and the average low temperature was 32.0 degrees.
The highest temperature was 70 degrees on the 6th and the lowest
temperature was minus 3 degrees on the 23rd. There were 17 days
with freezing temperatures.

Total precipitation in December was 4.38 inches, which was 0.02
inches above normal. The greatest 24-hour rainfall was 1.30
inches on the 13th and 14th. There were 13 days on which
measurable precipitation occurred, and two days with an inch or
more.

There was also 1 day with thunderstorms. The peak wind gust was
43 mph on the 22nd.

In Crossville, the average temperature was 39.0 degrees, which
was two-tenths of a degree above normal. The average high
temperature was 47.1 degrees and the average low temperature was
30.9 degrees. The highest temperature was 64 degrees on the 7th
and the lowest temperature was minus 4 degrees on the 23rd. There
were 18 days with freezing temperatures and two days with sub-
zero readings.

Total precipitation in December was 7.80 inches, which was 2.46
inches above normal. The greatest 24-hour rainfall was 3.26
inches on the 14th and 15th. There were 11 days on which
measurable precipitation occurred, and two days with an inch or
more.

There was also 1 day with thunderstorms. The peak wind gust was
54 mph on the 22nd.

The January outlook for Middle Tennessee from the Climate
Prediction Center favors both above normal temperatures and above
normal precipitation.
