NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1121 AM CST Thu Jan 06 2022

Areas affected...portions of central into eastern
Kentucky...northeast Tennessee...extreme western Virginia...extreme
western West Virginia

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 061721Z - 062315Z

SUMMARY...Periods of heavy snow are expected to continue through the
afternoon hours. 1-2 inch/hour snowfall rates and brief reductions
in visibility are possible with the heavier snowbands.

DISCUSSION...A 1012 mb surface low across central Alabama continues
to track east-northeastward in tandem with a 500 mb impulse pivoting
around broader cyclonic flow. A deep, moist airmass continues to
advect northward ahead of the surface low. Quasi-geostrophic ascent
will continue to foster deep-layer lifting of this deep, moist
airmass as it advects northward amid sub-freezing vertical profiles
(noted via 15Z RAP forecast soundings valid for 18Z). Given the
presence of a near-saturated troposhere, very efficient snowfall
production is expected within the -12 to -17C dendritic growth
layer, with 1-2 inch/hour snowfall rates and periods of reduced
visibility expected in the heavier snowbands.
