The month of January was cooler than normal with abundant rainfall
and a surprising amount of snowfall.

In Nashville, the month began with a high temperature of 78
degrees, which equaled the all-time record high temperature for
January. But the remainder of the month was much cooler. There was
only one other day when the temperature even reached 60 degrees.

The average temperature for January was 36.9 degrees, which was
2.7 degrees below normal. The average high temperature was 47.3
degrees and the average low temperature was 26.5 degrees. The
highest temperature was 78 degrees on the 1st and the lowest
temperature was 13 degrees on the 7th. There were 26 days when the
temperature dropped to freezing or below.

Total precipitation for the month was 6.53 inches, which was 2.51
inches above normal. The greatest 24-hour rainfall was 1.89 inches
on the 1st and 2nd. There were 9 days with measurable
precipitation and 4 days with an inch or more.

Measurable snowfall occurred on 5 days, with a monthly snowfall
total of 9.5 inches, including 6.3 inches on the 6th. This was the
snowiest January since 1985, and the 9th snowiest in Nashville's
history.

There was only 1 day with thunderstorms. The peak wind gust was 48
mph on the 1st.

In Clarksville, the average temperature for January was 34.7
degrees, which was 2.3 degrees below normal. The average high
temperature was 44.9 degrees and the average low temperature was
24.5 degrees. The highest temperature was 75 degrees on the 1st
and the lowest temperature was 7 degrees on the 7th. There were 27
days when the temperature dropped to freezing or below.

Total precipitation for the month was 5.05 inches, which was 1.77
inches above normal. The greatest 24-hour rainfall was 1.92
inches on the 31st of December and into the 1st of January. There
were 8 days with measurable precipitation and 2 days with an inch
or more.

There were 3 days with thunderstorms. The peak wind gust was 48
mph on the 1st.

In Crossville, the average temperature for January was 32.7
degrees, which was 2.6 degrees below normal. The average high
temperature was 42.2 degrees and the average low temperature was
23.2 degrees. The highest temperature was 72 degrees on the 1st
and the lowest temperature was 10 degrees on the 7th and 29th.
There were 27 days when the temperature dropped to freezing or
below.

Total precipitation for the month was 5.10 inches, which was 0.15
inches above normal. The greatest 24-hour rainfall was 1.87
inches on the 1st. There were 10 days with measurable
precipitation.

There was only 1 day with thunderstorms. The peak wind gust was
41 mph on the 3rd.

The outlook for February for Middle Tennessee from the Climate
Prediction Center calls for above normal rainfall and above normal
temperatures.
