Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Nashville TN

...Very quiet year for tornadoes across Tennessee...

2022 was thankfully a very quiet year for tornadoes across Middle
Tennessee. Only one tornado was confirmed to have touched down in
the midstate, which was an EF1 tornado that tracked from northern
Alabama across southern Giles County on January 1, 2022. This is
the lowest annual number of tornadoes across Middle Tennessee
since 1989, which also had just 1 tornado reported. This low
yearly total is in stark contrast to 2021, which saw 46 tornadoes
across Middle Tennessee - the highest annual total on record.
Since 1950, Middle Tennessee averages 9 tornadoes per year.

This year was also very quiet across the whole state of Tennessee
with a total of only 5 tornadoes recorded. Broken down by region,
West Tennessee observed 4 tornadoes, Middle Tennessee had 1
tornado, and East Tennessee reported no tornadoes. This yearly
total of 5 tornadoes is the lowest observed in Tennessee since
1987, when only 1 tornado was reported across the state. On
average since 1950, 18 tornadoes occur throughout Tennessee each
year.
